LZ was an ensemble talent...JT was basically Anderson (a virtuoso) and some supporting musicians...
I tried to find the interview but could not find the dialog about the same time studio experience...

I saw mention of "college radio"...What I'm more familiar with is community sponsored (commercial free) radio...This is where you will find the most eclectic musical offerings...they are often located in college towns...

I have found most music is dead, on commercial radio. "Pop" Country, classic rock etc.
To find "real" country, or new rock and roll, or bluegrass, or jazz you mostly have to look at alternatives like local public radio(KVMR.org in Grass Valley, Ca), or online, youtube, festivals etc.
Recently I have been amazed at what Morgan James has been doing; found her thru youtubes of Post Modern Jukebox.

This is kind of like arguing who is better, Superman or Batman....which is fun. But yes, Zep was an ensemble talent..... AND an ensemble of virtuosos. There aren't many short lists of great guitarists without Page on them. Robert Plant is undeniably one of the greatest rock vocalists ever with incredible range (and sensitivity as demonstrated with his work with Allison Krause on Raising Sand (Grammy, Best Album of the Year, etc). His solo career has been stellar. The late John Bonham was right up there with Keith Moon and Neil Peart. Chad Smith (drummer for Chilli Peppers says Bonham was the best ever. John Paul Jones was nothing special on base but has gone on to be quite a producer.
None if this is to take anything away from Tull. Loved them and still do.

I've got a number of Louis Jordan songs...and a lot of Louis Armstrong songs. Both fantastic.

This is also from the band that said "I hope I die before I get old." Kind of happened to two of them.
