What I remember from that incident is that Quayle had been handed an index card with the answers. Potato was spelled incorrectly on the card to set him up. Does anyone else remember that side of the story?

I do, some tend to forget that.

but I can't spell worth a lick in this sorry excuse for a language.

So how is your Spanish these days. Better brush up.

When I was a sophomore in high school in Marlow, OK, I took a Spanish class just because I thought it would be interesting. I tried to get a couple of my buddies to join me, but they declined, so the class was just me and 6 girls; very enjoyable class.:) But the problem that arose was that you had to take two years to get two credits; one year wouldn't count for anything. I took the one year and that summer we moved to Marietta, OK, and the school there did not offer Spanish. So I only had one year and have always kind of regretted not learning enough Spanish.

Apparently the kid was the only one in the room who knew how to spell it correctly, according to Ann Compton, a reporter who witnessed the event. Everyone applauded when the kid "corrected" the spelling, including the principal and the teacher who wrote it incorrectly on the card. She also said that Qualyle did not look at the card before correcting the kid.

The bottom line seems to be: Qualyle really did not know how to spell potato, and he wasn't set up. The principal and the teacher were just as guilty of not knowing as Quayle and should have been held accountable, since they were educators, not politicians.

Chris, my Mother took Latin in high school, but I never went to a high school that offered a course in Latin or even any foreign language except Spanish.

It's hard to call Spanish a "foreign" language anymore.

I got talked into taking Latin in high school, instead of Spanish, which was the only other language offered. I have regretted that decision ever since. Maybe if you are Catholic, and see the priesthood as a calling.

Otherwise, it's useless IMHO.

To learn spanish all you have to do is sit down with the kids or Grandkids and watch all the kid's cartoon shows on TV now.

German in high school. Also could have taken French or Spanish, but I wanted to know what the Germans were saying on Combat! Took Russian in college.

Hey Mike -
Is that an over 50 joke? (I get it):D
Hey, I resemble that remark.:)
I took German because I spoke Dutch. Figured it would be a shoe in ... NOT. They are definitely separate languages. But either one will give your tongue and throat a good workout.
Now I know two languages just in case.... You don't see too too much in German or Dutch here in Southern California. Never had to "push 1" to hear this message in German or Dutch either. shees.

I had made up my mind to be a Police Officer. The city I lived in was actively recruiting and the job offering listed priority to applicants conversant in a "Second Language"

I had 2 years of High School German and I had just returned from a Construction job in Austria. I definitely was conversant in German.

The interview went well. Just before it was over I reminded the 3 member committee of my second language skills. I was handed several foreign language test sheets... Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Cambodian and Hindi... but no German.

I was told the department did not test for German because the need was not there. I happened to have the recruiting flyer with me and showed the panel it only stated second language and nothing about specific languages.

I asked for the Language credit and offered to return for testing since I met the criteria as posted... One of the members thank me for coming and promptly ended the interview.

Later I learned though a friend in the Department that the panel decided against me because of my remark in leaving that the city must not have many German speaking criminals...

Live and learn...

My grandparents (dads side) were from Germany. Dad spoke fluent German. By process of osmosis, I learned a little. I did 4 years of Spanish in high school. ("Spain Spanish" as opposed to Mexican Spanish. There is a difference)

That's funny!!!

Not to get too far off topic, but I was an aircraft firefighter for a short time in the Marine Reserves and was considering joining the fire depertment. The city of SF was hiring, but only Asian Females. When I realized that qualifications had nothing to do with the job, I lost interest.
