I know you mentioned that before SG but it conflicts with what I was told by the head mechanic at our local Ford tractor dealer where my N was purchased new in 1951. I have got to give him the benefit of the doubt since he has more than 50 years experience wrenching on old, hard-working Fords. Have you ever worked an N hard on unleaded gas that you know to have original valves? I have, and have burned up many a factory valve. It seems, based on your posts, that most of your older tractors are basically light-duty, parade-type service. I have no doubt that original, factory "hardened" valves would last a long time on unleaded gas for that duty. They may have been "hardened" but they do not last like the modern replacements do for near full-hp loads. Put her on 2 bottom plow, a 6.5 ft disc, or a pond scoop for a few 12 hour days, as I have, and you may be singing a different tune. I apologize in advance as I am surely to strike a nerve with this rebuttal to your "correction". I have great respect for most of what you post, I just believe you are in error on this subject based on my own personal experience and what I have been told by local experts. There is a big difference between a hard-working tractor and a show tractor and it seems that most of your expertise is with the latter.

I've never had a problem with 8,2, or 9 N's with unleaded gas. I have worked them too. I have seen a few stuck or warped valves, and a few worn out valves, but never seen any that failed as a result of unleaded gas.

By the way. just curious.. which non-working parade tractor were you refering to? My one pulling a 15' batwing? Or perhaps it was the one with the 10' 3pt mower? No.. maybee the one of the 5' brush hog? Could be one of the loader tractors that moves round hay bales? Or maybee the onew witrh the 2 bottom plow.. perhaps even the 6.5' dual ganged ford disc? Or.. the one on the box blade.. hmm.. 30" dirt scoop? Ahh.. wait.. I got it ..maybee the one with the cultivator attached! obviously that is the one with the cheese puff job!.. unless the one with the 8x8 drag harrow has it easier? hmm.. decisions.. decisions..

I bet someone might wonder how all of those 'non working' parade-only tractors got fixed. .. because I surly didn't buy them in 'parade' clothes 100% working. Oh wait.. that's right.. it's because I actually repaired what was wrong with them while refurbishing them.. you know.. power tools, wrenches cheater bars.. parts manual, overhead hoists ( which for some reason looked alot like another tractor with a loader and chain on it's bucket ) greasy concrete floors, etc.

some parade machine pics

more parade pics. note the rotary 'gras cutting things' on the back of the parade machines...

http://www.tractorshed.com/gallery/uptest/a10816.jpg

PS.. the parade tractor carring the 10' mower just got a rops.. also inthe pic is one of the parade machine laoders with mis matched paint on the laoder, and a rear counterweight ( that must be where the float hook up?? )

http://www.tractorshed.com/gallery/uptest/a17480.jpg

here's a pic of one with some large green 'float' on the back with folding wings.. must be getting ready for a parade?

http://www.todaystractors.com/tphotos/a2096.jpg

here's one of them parade mobiles with a pig cage chained in to that thing on front of the tractor

http://www.tractorshed.com/gallery/tphotos/a121133.jpg

same parade machine with some ?black stuff? inexplicably in the front 'area' of the tractor.. can't be dirt.. parade machines don't run in dirt do they?

would a parade machine do this?

or this?

I missed your point of this comment? Nice pics though

In post # 48 I was ?accused? of only having 'parade' machine experience. IE.. not having working machines.. or perhaps no knowledge of working on a working machine. vs just setting on one with a pretty shiney paint job in a parade, that perhaps someone else must have restored for me, since I don't have any mechanical or electrical skills myself to have done any wrenching, fabrication or anything on any of the machines I own. :(

I was thinking that post was not well thought out.

SG, how many acres do you work how many tractors on? This may give us some idea as to how hard those tractors are actually worked. I seem to recall a number of around 13 acres and 14 or so tractors but I may be mistaken. I use but (4) on 100 acres, not counting my (2) lawnmowing machines. Unleaded gas may (or may not be) be hard on old valves but at least it is easy on spark plugs. The set I have in my 8n are more than 20 years old and still look pretty good. Have you noticed any improvement in spark plug life with unleaded gas? I suppose I may be imagining that also.

lost count on the tractors.. 14 sounds about right.

still 13 ac as listed in my profile.

And right now I'mmowing 2x per week here in florida.

Can't say that I have any problems with spark plugs.. even the 2 cycle stuff like weed eaters and chain saws.. etc. I usually clean the small engine plugs once per year ( blast style plug cleaner ). and regap then reinstall. usually only toss a plug now if it has insulator damage.

I save older plugs for use when painting.. thread them in then paint.. etc.

the odd plug failure now and then, I damaged electrode or insulator.. or threads or whatnot will get them tossed. I'm pretty much buying tune up parts whenever I buy a new- to- me machine, that way I know it is starting with good points and plugs.. past that I'm getitng excelent lifespan out of points and plugs. I avoid using cheap points like tisco points whenever possible. I have a jam jar full of tisco points from old ignition kits that I keep as backup.. but generally I like standard ignition or blue streak ignition parts. better rubbing block like, better looking breaker contacts.. plus you can get HD pierced points in the premium brands. The tecn to clean good with white coarse typing paper. As uch as I like my 6v gassers.. the diesels are slowly spoiling me.. I'm way glad my 5000 is a diesel and not a gasser.. as much as it mows.. I'd constantly be fueling it if it was a gasser..

At work, over half of our equipment is diesel. Still.. we have quite a few gas machines.. especially rollers from the 60's, a couple gasser grade-all units, a mixer, and an asphalt distribuitor.. littleford with some etnyre parts.. that unit is running an old redseal engine.

I'd say that we are lucky in the 'engine rebuild dept' partially due to good maintenance habits, but since I have been at the company, we have rebuilt the following engines:

80's toyota pickup gasser.. needed bearing shells.. belonged to an employee
90's eara jd trackhoe, diesel ( head rebuilt )
79 jd 2240 diesel ( head work ) ( pto ind clutch as well )
1 each cummins 285, 290 , 300 diesel. 1 ate a supercharger, one ate an oil pump drive, and the other was a salvage engine we picked up used as a replacement and we rebuilt it before running it as 'insurance'
cat 3208 .. (diesel) simply got weak.. well worn

so far I don't see a fuel connection yet :)

My Dad and I rebuilt the engine in this parade queen in 1990. He finally let me have it for good in 1992. 1950, Dad bought in 1960.

1st pic is parade with kids.
2nd pic is parade with 2 bottom plow. Get lots of compliments on how well she pulls.
3rd pic is parade with limbs.
4th pic is parade with cement off to build a pole barn. Weak sister pump and cylinder held the load that day.

Sorry I dont have more parade pics, but I was on it during the parade of, mowing with 6' finish mower, 6' grader box, 7' straight blade in snow, 6' pulerizer, 30" dirt scoop, 9" auger, etc, etc.

Runs on 87 octane from the Marathon within driving distance.

Yes, she is semi-retired now since I got the 'Bota in 2009, but at least every other week, I find some reason to put a little time on her.
