I was an Embassy Marine with the State Department and had to learn a little about locks and security.
Every lock has a time rating on it. There is no such thing as an impossible lock, just how long it takes a pro to open it. The goal of a lock is to delay the intruder long enough for your other security measures to take effect.
I've never heard of a lock with a full minute rating. Most are just a few seconds to a dozen or so.
Of course, that was during the cold war and we were worried about the Russians!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Household locks and deadbolts are easy to get through with a cordless drill and half inch bit. Takes me about ten seconds and I'm just a handyman.
Outside alarms are silenced with expanding foam. Just spray it in the box or cone before you do anything else.
Monitored systems rely on phone lines. Just go on the side of the house and cut the wires. If it's a cell system, you can usually see the antena. It comes right out.
The list goes on and on, but fortunately for all of us, most criminals are drug addicts looking for an easy score and will always go to the easiest source. If it worked once, there's a good chance they will come back.
Just locking the doors and windows along with having the lights on will deter most attempts.
I've had two cars broken into and my mt. bike taken from my garage while working in the yard. I went in for a bathroom break and a soda. When I came out, it was gone!!!
There was a guy who worked at the Honda dealer where I used to live that was selling keys to anybody who brought a VIN in. All you have to do is look for it on the dash of the car and get the number. He'd make a key for that car.
Sorry for your loss.
