Is there anything lower than a thief?

I was an Embassy Marine with the State Department and had to learn a little about locks and security.

Every lock has a time rating on it. There is no such thing as an impossible lock, just how long it takes a pro to open it. The goal of a lock is to delay the intruder long enough for your other security measures to take effect.

I've never heard of a lock with a full minute rating. Most are just a few seconds to a dozen or so.

Of course, that was during the cold war and we were worried about the Russians!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Household locks and deadbolts are easy to get through with a cordless drill and half inch bit. Takes me about ten seconds and I'm just a handyman.

Outside alarms are silenced with expanding foam. Just spray it in the box or cone before you do anything else.

Monitored systems rely on phone lines. Just go on the side of the house and cut the wires. If it's a cell system, you can usually see the antena. It comes right out.

The list goes on and on, but fortunately for all of us, most criminals are drug addicts looking for an easy score and will always go to the easiest source. If it worked once, there's a good chance they will come back.

Just locking the doors and windows along with having the lights on will deter most attempts.

I've had two cars broken into and my mt. bike taken from my garage while working in the yard. I went in for a bathroom break and a soda. When I came out, it was gone!!!

There was a guy who worked at the Honda dealer where I used to live that was selling keys to anybody who brought a VIN in. All you have to do is look for it on the dash of the car and get the number. He'd make a key for that car.

Sorry for your loss.

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( Most thieves are lazy though and go for easy stuff )</font>

"Most", probably so, but I've know them to work very hard for long hours for little or no profit. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif One of my favorite cases was 3 burglars who drove from Dallas to Louisiana, burglarized a business, loaded a heavy safe into the trunk of their car, hauled it all the way back to Dallas in the middle of the night with the trunk lid tied down because the safe was too big to let them close it completely, managed to carry that safe up a flight of stairs in Dallas (still don't know how the 3 of them found the strength to do that, although one of them told me it's amazing how strong you are when you're scared), then spent hours chopping into the bottom of the safe, only to find about $30 in small change and the titles to the company's fleet of trucks. And less than an hour after they finally got into the safe, I showed up with a search warrant. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I think they were so tired and discouraged, they didn't even mind waiving extradition and going back to Louisiana to prison. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My fireamrms are stored in our Browning safe with four pounds of blackpowder duct tapped near the lock and the interior hinges as a 100% deterrent to any thieves ever coming back again! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"I think a safe is sometimes just a convienent carrying case for the thieves any way"

The better gun safes can be anchored to the floor, walls, and/or ceilings in such a way that the anchors can only be accessed from inside the safe. Mine also weigh 1200lbs.

Would it stop a pro? No Way - they could most likely pick the lock. Will it stop a curiousity seeker - absolutely!

When our kids were young we took them on a trip to Disneyland. While staying in a hotel during the trip we had access to a safe within the room made by Elsafe. Most of these safes are secured to the floor and have a digital code for unlocking. Elsafe makes these safes for hotels worldwide and are a big, big corporation.

I was so impressed with what I saw that when we finally got home I got on the phone to the company and had one of the compact safes shipped to our home for my handgun. With a digital combination I can be in the safe in just seconds and there is a built in safety feature that if you dial in the wrong combination three times in a row is disables the lock for a 30 minute lockout interval.

Kids are naturally curious. Once when the family was headed out the door I went to the safe for a bit of extra traveling money only to find out that I couldn't get in because it was counting down from a 30 minute wrong combination time-out. As it turned out one of my sons (Scott) had been trying to crack the code just minutes prior to my trip to the safe. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Sitting for that 30 minute time-out made the wife and I realize that the safe had just prevented one of our sons from gaining access to the 9mm handgun and it really made us feel a bit more secure as a result.

We both had some words with our son and yes he too had a time out from privileges for the next 30 days.

Of all the tools that I have ever purchased we both consider the Elsafe to be the wisest money spent. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I hope you all think about it.......
