It was buried pretty deep. Thought it would flip trying to get it out, but I guess there was no real way for it to do so. Pops was on the phone with the wrecker from work (Mack), but we finally put our brains together and chained the log to the rear wheels. Worked like a charm...

Never being shy about demonstrating my ignorance (either intentionally or unintentionally), what does chaining the log to the rear wheels do for you? I have only lived on a property with no paved roads for 10 years, so I am still learning

if you can chain a log, and wheels turn, you can go forward/reverse enough where the tractor lifts itself up and over the log. In our case, we did both wheels and locked the differential and with the help of another tractor, we eased back. If you do this, make sure not to let the wheels keep spinning and log tears undercarriage/rear up.

Thanks...here's some more.
Going to stain the concrete a brownish color (trying to find a color that isn't too dark, though). Will be adding lean-tos on each long side. One for porch and will be concrete and the other for some equipment that will probably be slag/pea gravel.
50" wood burning insert (was going to go full on brick chimney, but trying to keep costs somewhat reasonable. Will have brick hearth/mantle and trying to decide if want hearth 12" high or 18". Thinking 18" is the way to go, that way guests can sit easily if a crowd is out there hanging out.

I have two fireplaces - one brick and one fieldstone - both are wonderful. 18" high hearth is the way to go. We sit on them all the time - it provides great flexibility.
