An extra pair of longjohns and things carry on as normal :)

Yes, isn't it about now that they start working on opening the ice roads in Canada?

They often have -50 or -60F and they never close the doors on the dozers, etc. Every year, something breaks through the ice and they don't want to be trapped when the dozer sinks.

I remember reading that during the IGY (International Geophysical Year, 1957), they parachuted a team down to the polar ice at -60 below to build a runway for the planes to land bringing in the equipment. First team had to sleep in tents until they got the runway operational.

Lol, I know the feeling..I was out at our barn taking care of our animals earlier this evening, and it was -13F with the windchill, and I splashed water from a trough on my cold weather suit( generic but warm Carhart knockoff) and it froze instantly in hard drops all over, and I had alot of trouble getting my boots off because the laces were frozen solid. It is really gusting out now, ands its close to -20F. I can't wait to snow blow the entire farm out in the morning! Lol

Just think of your local firefighters out there in the cold and wet! I remember one fire where the captain had to go stand in the shower at the firehouse to melt the ice on his turnout coat so that he could unbuckle it. Let me tell you about the fun of carrying a charged hose line up a ladder coated with ice!

Been there, done that! We had one years ago that we had to break the ice off our coat buckles with pliers, got the turnouts off & there stood up by themselves!

Don't miss that (or 100*+ summer fires) one bit!!!!!!!!!!! ~~ grnspot

It's gonna be a strange one today - and I'm staying home from work to avoid any road time. Highs will be near 30 this morning (we've been in a deep freeze most of the last month, so this is an anomaly) but the rain starts noonish, temps drop and snow starts (read: ice base on snowy roads) followed by 40mph winds and the Blizzard a Warning starts. Temps are supposed to get to -60* wind chill, -30 actual temps by morning and throught Monday. Good thing the snow won't accumulate enough to warrant blowing with my 2305 (no cab for Christmas). It drifts quickly out where we are so the Boss will stay attached to the truck. Work from home, stoke the fireplace and crack the Bailey's.
Stay safe out there! And for much of the country, just stay home!

Pine Strip ... I was born and raised in SW MN.. Left there when I was 29 for a winter job in Florida .. Worked the southern states and then settled on a ranch in Oklahoma ... Have only been back to visit a handful of times .. I remember how rough that area gets.

To answer Kenmac's question of how I keep the animals water from freezing (no big shock to us northerners, as I'm sure we all do the same thing)...My 100 gallon horse stock tank has a submersible electric heater in it, and the goats, sheep, llamas, alpacas, mini horses and chickens, ducks and geese, all have heated buckets to keep their water in. My electric bill takes a real hit in cold weather, but at least my furry and feathered pals have water.

Unbelievable, I just can not wrap my mind around living where it gets that cold. I'm not being a smart a55 or trying to put anyone or anything down, I just can't fathom how you people do it. I've been in Colorado where it got down to like -5F over night but I was only there for a week. How do you do it? I must be a big wuss when it comes to the cold. They are predicting we will have a couple of nights at about 25 for next week and that is unusual for us. You people hang in there and hopefully everyone will be OK.

Winter can be a lot of extra chores for sure. Get ready for winter, deal with winter, and clean up after winter.

I think that's why moving south later in life is popular, people would just rather be doing something else than deal with winter, or they get tired of the cold making their arthritis ache, always risking a broken bone if they slip and fall, driving can be hazardous, etc.

Besides moving south, older folks up north often migrate toward condo living where someone else is doing the outdoor maintenance and chores. Or, they pay people to plow the driveway, shovel off the roof and such.

A lot of people up north enjoy winter sports like cross country and downhill skiing, snow shoeing, ice fishing, snow mobiles, and ice skating. But, after a certain age, those aren't as much fun as they used to be.

We had -12 degrees F when I left for work this AM at 0400. Wind chill factor was -28 F. I think we got up to about +6 F today. Currently it is +3 F and expected to drop into the minus 5 to 10 degree temps tonight. Heat wave is coming tomorrow with temps to reach near 30. Past three days also accumulated between 6-8 inches of snow each day so got some tractor time in when I got home each day. I don't mind the cold so much but when its backed by a stiff wind it cuts right through you. I was glad my occupation is indoors. My hat goes off to those who have to work outside when its that cold out.

30 below at 7 AM. Right now it is 4 below. We are supposed to get some snow overnite. (It will get warmer then)
How do I stay warm in these sub zero temps? Easy. I have a quilted flannel shirt that I wear over top of a T-shirt, IF I am only going out to start the tractor or the Heep. IF I am going anywhere I have a quilted vest that zips inside of a quilted winter coat that goes with me. I may not wear it, but if I get stuck or break down the heavy coat goes on. I also wear a watch cap (French block heater). My winter boots are rated for -60F. I have lived/existed in this frozen country for 67.25 years and it hasn't killed me yet.

Yeah, you have to know how to dress for the cold. It was -10F when I came in from my evening chores. I had 2 pairs of thermal socks in my uninsulated rubber chore boots and my feet were fine. I had on regular jeans, my legs never seem to get cold. I had a T-shirt, insulated under shirt, quilted flannel shirt, fleece lined hooded sweat shirt and a hooded work jacket, ski hat, and thinsulate waterproof gloves. I was warm enough to do my chores ( an hour and a half) with no problem.

Southern Kansas here and supposed to have a chance to go below 0 tomorrow night...and we usually have lots of wind. When this happens you don't see many people outside.

I work with a guy that came from northern Wyoming. First time I met him he was wearing a short sleeve shirt and no coat when the temp was mid 20's. He just laughed and said this isn't cold.
