I have a 316 with an onan engine that is not charging , I've narrowed it down to the stator not giving any voltage to the regulator.

my question is what needs to be removed to pull the engine. the front bolts are no problem but the rear bolts seem to be hidden. do they unbolt from the bottom. with the heat shields in the way I can't see how else the rear mounting bolts could be set up.

The two back bolts should be visible if you look underneath. They should be threaded into the oil base.
That's what mine had.

thanks thats what I figured, are they blind holes or will the oil drain out if I pull the bolts out.

the leads to the stator are not shorted but they don't have any voltage, not even a bit. If it rains this weekend I will get into this job and start by pulling the engine and having a look at what things look like back there.

They are blind.
If you have a digital camera, take some pics as you go. It has always helped me with making sure I didn't screw something up,or forget anything.:)

Good Luck

just a quick update on this.

The engine is out of the frame, no need to drain the oil

flywheel is off, no need for a puller, I just had two people hold the flywheel up with some outward tension and hit the center bolt with a sledge hammer, not too hard as to damage the threads but hard enough because a regular 16 oz hammer wasn't cutting it.

got the stator off and cleaned stuff up back there but it wasn't nearly as dirty as I expected.

total time invested so far is 3 hours but that is going slow and taking notes and cleaning up as required.

heading to the dealer for parts this afternoon. They are not in stock so I will have to wait for them. I'm glad I tried this, I was hesitating at first but it really isn't as bad as it looks.

I should have mentioned this before you went to the dealer, but parts through Onan may be easier on the wallet than a JD dealer.
I paid a bit over $40.00 for a 20 amp stator through Onan.Hopefully your dealer price will be the same.:)

My last foray into Onan 16hp engine got me a quote of $275 for rectifier from Onan, eBay almost as bad... I put a 10A unit from snowmobile on and it worked fine, only cost me $15.

Well,I guarantee you a P218G 20 amp stator is not 275.00.:) I didn't even see a rectifier for that price.

191-1456/191-1256 20 AMP Alternator/Stator B & P Series Engines Onan altenator/Stator for B & P Series Engines [191-1456] - $41.50 : Onanparts.com, Your Onan Parts Solution

This same stator is 280.00 bucks through John Deere! I can see making a profit, but then again, all of JD's pricing is on the ridiculous side.

that is not the right p/n for my s/n dealer was 150$ canadian and onan parts would have been 112$ but not sure if it was in stock. needed it quickly and shipping would have made it the same price

well, got everything back together

but it still doesn't charge. no voltage from the stator at full throttle.

I'm leaning towards a defective part but I'm also open to other ideas if you have any.

good news is that the next time will go faster because I know what has to come off and what doesn't now.

I feel stupid.

I was testing the output of the stator on DC so no wonder there was no output.

The sad part is that I was testing the original the same way so I now have a spare stator that may or may not be working but the regulator is also shot. It was replaced about five years ago.

any ideas why a regulator would die prematurely.
