JD 4200 won't go forward or backwards and PTO won't function

I have finally received the high pressure test kit (since apparently no one carries them in store) and will begin running some tests tonight. It sounds like I'm looking for an issue with something other than pumps/motors in the hydraulic system. Being that it quit working suddenly with no intermittent issues before hand seems less likely to be a pump/motor. While looking at the tech manual, I don't see any troubleshooting solutions for the rear PTO and 'wheels not turning' for the hydrostatic transmission that are similar. I assumed if the pump went out on the hydrostat it would affect only forward and reverse as the PTO is mechanical rather than hydraulic. Thank you all for the input and the ideas. Now that I have the equipment for testing, I will let you know what I find out.

Don’t know if you have the problem fixed or not, but I just had the same problem with my 3120 this past weekend and it was the wire to my seat safety switch was severed. I Know you said previous owner disconnected it, but I would look more into it

Did the engine die when you depressed the F/R pedals or attempt to engage PTO? I would've assumed it would die if the seat switch was broken. I actually reconnected my seat switch while waiting to test all of the hydraulics and it works as it should. If i'm off of the seat and attempt to engage PTO or the pedals, the motor dies.

So, I checked all of the test port pressures and didn稚 get a reading. While I was under there, I found some shredded rubber inside the tunnel opening where you access the hydraulic filter and test ports. It looked like it was possibly round and about an inch thick, no telling what the diameter was though. I went back to where it quit working and there in the grass were a bunch of the same shredded rubber. It痴 about the density of a tire cleat. I知 assuming this could be the culprit but have NO IDEA what it could be. Any help would be appreciated.

That's the remains of the torsional damper. It is item 3 in sub-section 6 (crankshaft & flywheel) of the engine section (20 Engine) in the catalog link above. The engine is now mechanically disconnected from the transmission input shaft.

Time to split a tractor. But I think you will also need to pull the bell housing to remove the torsional damper from the flywheel. The front jacks mount to the bell housing, so the rear of the engine block will need to be supported. Perhaps with an engine hoist from the top side. Be advised that the engine will tip on the axle pivot if supported from only one point on the bottom.

Thanks Zebrafive. It was well worth the time it took to fabricate the parts. The swivel casters secure to the front mower deck mounting pads and are adjustable. The rear leg is mounted to the mower deck lift pads on the tunnel, and is also height adjustable.
