JD 4300 hydraulic screen clogged over and over

Is there a side (or top) port or covering that can be removed for a visual inspection into the bowels of the tranny?? It sounds to me like that stuff may be pooled in the bottom of the transmission and it may be too thick to drain out by itself. Does that sludge drip off the filter whenever you pull the filter out to change it? If it clings to it without dripping, I would be very concerned there could be a lot of that sludge just sitting around inside the housings. If you have to, buy/rent/borrow one of those small bore cameras and run it down in there for a look see.

The PTO cover plate is very easy to remove, and I recommend looking in
there for all 4x00 owners. Do it as part of the hyd oil replacement every
400 hours to see if the PTO clutch and brake are disintegrating. I scouped
out lots of sediment from my 1st 4300 and soon will do it for my second.
Most of my sediment seemed to be ground up aluminum and brake/clutch
friction material. Since the 4x10s used a different brake/clutch system
with electric actuation, I would be slightly less inclined to do this.

As for the new-and-improved vented filler caps, they are reasonably priced,
and I AM going to buy a second one when I place my next order from JD.

Not sure what the PTO cover plate is, or where, on the 4300. Tried to locate it in JDparts but couldn't find. Any hints or a pic that shows it?

I'm thinking I should follow your advice and do that inspection. Thanks, as it makes a lot of sense.
And sounds like it may be the source of the "sludge" the OP is talking about.
I will also get the replacement filler cap.

Thank you all for the replies. I havent been able to drain the system yet. I will take pictures and post. I did buy a new screen, but it looks like it's wrong. I think mine is wider and shorter, but cant remember for sure. I ordered with a part number that I got through jdparts online. Maybe they changed the design? I also had already ordered a new cap and it IS the black one. The yellow one had a hole directly through it I wonder if water somehow leaked in. Please let me know where the PTO cover plate is. I assume its right by the PTO. Will I need a new gasket for it? Antibacterial agents seem like a good idea. I will save some oil and some sludge and find somewhere to get it analyzed. I thought for sure someone else has had this problem, but maybe not. The tractor sits for long periods of time as I stated before and the idea of bacteria is really getting me thinking... Thanks again..

I have used Blackstone Labs to test the oils in my truck, they may do hydraulic oil also...

Good post, Dave! That's something for me to check out.

Here's the PTO cover removed. You can see the screen in the bottom left of the case (your looking from the rear). You just wipe everything out the rear. I used a few gallons of kerosene to wash it out.

The cover comes off pretty easy and uses a sealer rather than a gasket. I used some generic RTV and no major leaks yet.

The current part for the stainer is YZ81443, but it looks like YZ80887, YZ81252, and YZ81413 are old parts that cross to the new part.

Yeah, I wish I'd have thought of it when I replaced all the hydraulic fluid two years ago. 400 hours is a long time away. Another two years I'd guess. Heck, I only got 190 hours on the X475 and I use it twice as much and have had it for twice as long.
