Friend and got this planter this weekend. Single row planter everything is in one piece with a couple of plates in side. Does anyone know anything about it by the picture. What model?? and does anyone know where I can get a manual or a parts list. There are a few broken springs but besides that it looks find and seems to work fine..

Any information on model, manual, parts or just general knowledge would be great. Never used a planter so have no idea how it works.

Go here to ID and for parts list John Deere - Parts Catalog . You can look at the different models to determine what model it is. I can't tell a lot about it, appears to be a 23 series unit planter http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/pdfs/PC0503.PDF. If it works ok, should be able to plant anything you can find a plate for. Lots of them on ebay. HTH Mark

If there was a model number on it where would it be?
I guess finding a manual would be difficult?

Thanks for the help

The first link I listed is JD parts and should have a box on the left side listing the various JD planters. The second link is the model 23 parts manual. On the first few pages of the 23 parts manual, are pictures of the variations of 23 planters. They look similar to yours, I just cant tell because of picture quality. Look at some of the major components of your planter unit. Should be stamped with a part number. Assuming it is a model 23 for example, the press wheel will be stamped with either 454,458, or 460 depending on the year manufactured and model. By looking through the JD parts link, you'll find units that match what you have. Compare the parts numbers on your unit with those on the JD parts page. That's the way I figured out how to identify the older stuff without the TOP SECRET decoder ring. :D I think most of the older units like yours had painted on model numbers. Have to figure out what you have to get the right manual. JD sells reprints of the manuals (kinda pricey) or you can find originals on ebay sometimes ( also kinda pricey). The older planters are pretty simple machines, and will plant reliably for those of us not needing several hundred bushel per acre production. HTH Mark

Mark, How did you find that pdf? I have searched the jdp website before looking for the PC-1001 parts manual (JD 71 Flexi) and never found one. Would you know if the PC-1001 parts manual is available on the jdp website?

Andy, you're welcome. Luremaker, starting at www.jdparts.com, there's a link in blue titled John Deere Parts Catalog. When you click on it, it takes you here: John Deere - Parts Catalog . There are several search options: model search, equipment search, catalog number search...etc. I've tried the model number search, and not had any luck. Try going to equipment search and enter planter. It gets you here: John Deere - Parts Catalog with search results listed for the various planters PDFs are available for. Scroll down a little, there's a listing for 1001-71 Flexi Unit Planter-30Aug01. It opens up a little different than the others, much more detailed. Several options there, too. Indexed for Attachments, Alphabetical, Sectional, and Parts. I nosed around a little trying to figure it out, alphabetical seemed to be easier to find things on. When you open that index, by letter, the individual assembly you're looking for opens up in the box on the right, part numbers listed in a box on the left. Hope I didn't confuse you, Here's what it looks like when doing an alphabetical search under the letter p for press wheel John Deere - Parts Catalog. I guess it's different because they still support that model (this statement is a thinly disguised question, and strictly conjecture on my part ). It appears you can enter individual parts in a cart for purchase (see previous statement about conjecture:D). All the links worked for me, hope it helps. I've found parts PDFs for a couple of old JD/VB grain drills, a model 7 lister planter, and a 70-flexi planter. I like messing around with the old stuff, the parts manuals help when restoring or repairing them. Hope I've helped, haven't been too long winded, and/or broken any copyright laws. Mark

Thanks for the reply Mark. Great tutorial. I was hoping to find the complete 71 Parts book in one easy to download pdf file.

Last spring I went down the entire JD Parts Catalog and printed each page to pdf and then merged the multiple pdfs into a single pdf file which worked well but it would have been nice to have a pdf of the original catalog. Steve
