From what you are saying, you may want to look at older ex-farm Utility tractors. Insist on a loader, PS, and gears rather than hydrostat, if your area is muddy or snowy, add 4wd to the "must have" category.

You are sure right that a larger machine does work faster. At first it seems like the small machine is going to win out doing big jobs because it is so handy and works so much faster than doing the work with a shovel & wheelbarrow. But then your neighbor comes over with his old 4020 JD and you see what a couple of passes will do pulling an 2000# 8 foot blade. Then he turns around and it's scary how much dirt a larger tractor will move around. It's a whole new world.

The good news is that old style tractors are incredibly durable. A used one that works well for a day will probably work just the same for years to come.

Relative to skid steers, Utility size tractors in the 40 to 60 hp range have the power and weight to work with a skid steer. I'm not knocking skid steers; they are great in a limited area. But they just are not as versatile, or as good for transporting longer distances, and tough on any grass surface. And no 3pt . Plus good ones are more expensive than tractors. For the money I'd buy a used tractor over a used skid steer.

Good points I wasnt advocating for a skid steer to buy one. Point was the tractor is a versatile tool and if your buying one machine, thats the one to get. My point being was if you are doing a lot of earth work up front it might be more worthwhile to use a skid steer to do get done quickly or an Ex. Then of course the tractor can be used to accomplish random dirt task. while limited in scope the skid steer or an ex will run circles around a tractor in terms of earth work.

You can have other insurance it doesnt have to be Kubotas, even though the dealer may make it sound that way. The KTAC or kubota insurance was priced right anyways. With that said buying a 20-30k machine having insurance on it makes sense anyways.

that was gonna be one of my first additions. Any recommendations on a good one that is easily removed

I have a pirahna on the 2538 and love it .I also have standard tooth bars on my other 2 compacts and like them for digging. The regular tooth bars make loading things with a chain real easy where the pirahna not so much. The pirahna is better for scraping the ground clear of small brush and saplings.
