Re: Jim\'s Pole Barn Project - hopefully

Sorry, was still outside working yesterday. As Jerry said we got about half of the trusses set Saturday. I had Jerry (Inspector507), my cousin Richard (rsatter22), my Dad, my F-I-L, and my B-I-L here working. Here is the first picture looking from the right side up to the trusses.

Re: Jim\'s Pole Barn Project - hopefully

Here is a shot from the back looking up at the trusses and the 24" overhang. Originally this was only going to be 12", glad I went with the 24 it is so much more proportion to the building. The little tractor with the boom pole attached did a great job lifting the trusses by themselves, but with these huge overhangs attached it was a little more than the tractor could muster. I could get it up about 3/4 of the way and then we had to "help" the tractor get it the rest of the way up. Insert your own joke here.....I know I've got mine.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Jim\'s Pole Barn Project - hopefully

Here is how the boom pole was attached to the tractor. I can' t take credit for this design. It was Richard's (rsatter22) design. Worked really well. Only got scared one time and that was setting the 3rd truss (2nd inside truss) and it got loose from the guess up on top and it started swing. I believe it was Jerry that finally got it under control. Thanks Jerry.

Re: Jim\'s Pole Barn Project - hopefully

This is the other end of the boom pole where we used a chain to attach the trusses. I'll get another picture of it sometime, but I didn't have a key to the tractor and the camera together at the same time yesterday. Speaking of yesterday. Gotta get pictures of yesterday's progress as well. Didn't do near as well yesterday. Got the front overhang made, the rear poles cutoff to the proper height, a fascia board up on the right side, and about 5 or 6 sheets of OSB. Had trouble getting the first sheet to be square. The building was square, we just weren't getting it in the right spot. It would look OK, but by the time you'd put the second sheet on the 1/16" of an you were off was now 1/2". Took about 3 tries to get it right. Unfortunately one of those was with it completely nailed down. Took a while to get it back off.

Re: Jim\'s Pole Barn Project - hopefully

I forgot to thank everybody for helping me set those trusses. Especially Richard and my B-I-L Gary. They were the ones that were doing the bulk of the work up there with the trusses. I got to play tractor driver. I'd also like to say thanks to Jerry for coming down and spending the day. He was a great help walking the trusses and he always had the ropes reattached to the trusses and the mark on the truss that they were using to line them up. Now just gotta see when I can get this party back to together to get finished.......Please guys.....come on, I'm beggin.......don't leave me with half a roof...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Jim\'s Pole Barn Project - hopefully

Since Jerry is busy traveling the state,, he could have stopped here on his way home. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif We had pizza and beer yesterday. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The boom pole design looks similar to somebody else's /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hopefully the snow will hold off on both of us!!

Re: Jim\'s Pole Barn Project - hopefully

Jim,
I was the "helper" too long in construction. I could see what needed done next without having someone ask for it. When you're getting paid, they don't ask they yell..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I know I came down to "watch" but enjoyed helping out. Depending on the time frame on getting the second half on, I may be able to come down and "watch" again.

RedDog,
I've seen your progress as well............looks good. I was down your way last Thursday. Around Tarkiln&Ross Rds, just south of Lancaster.
And that DK65 would be a sight for me to see /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Jim\'s Pole Barn Project - hopefully

Hopefully when I get ready to put the rest of the sheeting up it'll go a little faster. I bought a framing nailer today. I first bought a Bostitch, but once I got it home I didn't care for it (didn't use it, didn't really take it out of the box long). I took it back and got a Porter-Cable. Wanted a full head, but everything Lowes had was clipped and Sears didn't have anything at all and didn't feel like running around looking, besides that would mean I would also have to go back there to buy nails and some of the smaller hardware stores aren't open when I need them to be. I think I'll be happy with the PC, I picked up a box of 16d 3 1/4", 8d 2 3/8" smooth, and 8d 2 3/8" ringed for the roof sheeting. It seems pretty light considering how big it is. It uses paper taped nails. I was able to buy 3 boxes of nails for $15 less than I paid for 2 box for the Bostitch and the nailers themselvers were the same price ($229). Another thing I liked about the P-C is that it has a case. I know it isn't a biggie, but I think it helps your tools last longer if they just aren't thrown in a tool box. Just my opinion though.
