I live in NS, have a jimna 284 with the Quanchi QC385T engine. Believe it or not some pencil pusher had the bright idea to put a decompression lever in it. So, without a block heater short of removeing the glycol and preheating it you will not start it in below 0 C without a block heater. So, I went to UAP and got an inline model that I installed and have had no problems since.
A note though, I plug into a timer to save electricity

From one Bluenoser to 'nother, what is wrong with the decompression? My 204 has a shuttle shift which prevents the use of the decompression lever even tho the engine is equipped with it.
Personally I'd sooner not have the shuttle shift and keep the decompression option.
On the block heater option, I put an inline one in mine this winter. plugged in for an hour before I need it and she's good to go. It will start without but I figure why not, it has to be easier turning over a warm engine rather than a cold one.
What part of NS, I'm in the Milford/9 Mile River area 1/2 hour outside of Halifax....Mike

Simpsons corner, just outside of New Germany
in the engine manual that came with the 284 it shows where the lever is but it does not explain how to adjust it. If there is anyone out there who knows how to adjust it I would love to know. But, what I can understand is that it works like a thermostat when it gets cold a spring pushes against a cam on the exhaust side and unseats the valves? Rough explanation I know but thats as good as it gets.
Mike did you get your tractor as a kit? I ordered the kit, it took me just over 10 hours to put it together,
Gordon

Hey Gord,
That sounds like a funky system for sure. Like I said for mine, the engine is equipped with a decompression sytem but there's no external linkage other than a lever sticking out of the valve cover.
I know it works as I had to tear the engine apart with only 50 hours on it a few months back to replace an incorrectly installed rear cam bearing CHINESE TRACTOR OWNERS CLUB FORUM - bad injector symptoms . It was a learning experience for sure.
Not a kit, bought it from Gates in Digby in September. With tearing it apart it might as well have been a kit LOL.
I'm trying to find a landscape rake for it now with no luck at all. Can't justify a new one at $700 so I'm going to go to the equipment auction in Truro next weekend and see what's around.....Mike

I've never heard of a Jinma compression release that employed any sort of spring or thermostat to activate it. The Jinma compression releases are a dead simple system consisting of a lever that, when turned, opens the exhaust valves to relieve cylinder compression. The lever is spring-loaded so it returns to the "off" position when released.

It is easy for the compression release lever to get mis-adjusted if the valve cover is removed. You need to pay close attention when re-assembling things to be sure the activating shaft of the compression release assembly is in the correct orientation to open the valves when the lever is turned. It can easily get 180 degrees out of time if you're not paying attention.

a foot note from g0rd0
I read the last few posts and took my 284 up to my local mechanic along with the manual for the engine. As it turns out there was no reason for the decompression leaver to give me any grief. The problem was that the valve lashs on #2 & #3 were out to lunch, #2 the exhaust was way to tight & #3 the exhaust was way too loose. Now all is adjusted and from a 2 dec. celcius start no heater & now glow plugs on it fired right up, no problem.
Thanks to you both for your help
