Chris, I was curious why you need a back hoe when you already have an excavator? There must be some very obvious reasons. The excavators I spoke with will always choose an excavator over a hoe for speed and the variety of dig situations they can do that hoes just can't or don't do as well. Todays mini excavators are really fantastic.

Rat,
I am absolutely 100% addicted to my excavator, there is not a more efficient digging machine available as far as I'm concerned, and I'm not a big backhoe guy because the excavator is soooo efficient. The reason for the hoe is this...I do work for a few electrical and water pump contractors and also other landscapers, the hoe is especially handy to go dig a water line or electrical trench or for planting, and this machine also allows me to bring the Harley rake along to clean up after backfilling.I would have to say though, that I probably use the rake on the machine more than the hoe since getting the excavator at least that was the way with my L35.Also in the future if I hire someone I will have a machine to send out to dig if the excavator is busy.As far as a mini I think they are fantastic but, that would mean I would have to have 2 machines,1 for raking/loader work and 1 for digging, and if I show up with one more machine my wife may be looking for a new husband!

Chris, the mini excavators are incredible units and the main reason I chose not to get a hoe for my tractor. Their ability to dig especially in precarious situations like steep hills etc. is superb and unmatched. I do like the loader they chose to put on the JD 110. I've used a JD 210 which has a similar loader. I'm a bit suprised to see JD still using the old style loader on their new 4710 and down series, they just don't look like they are beefy enough. Side by side next to the Kubotas, they are small tubed with small bracing, Rat...

Rat,Inever looked at the compact Deeres before the 110 because they didn't "look" heavy duty enough when compared to an L35 or L48,not to say they aren't,but lets face it,they were designed for mid duty use,and thats the market they are intended for.If there was no such thing as a 110 I would all ready have an L48(no offense intended greenies)because it was the most industrial compact until now anyway, only time will really tell how the 110 does against its orange counter-part,I just hope it turns out to be a wise investment.

Just got back from Las Vegas tonight,I was out there to goto the Con-Ex/Con-Ag equipment show, this show runs every three years and if you are an equipment freak like I am then you should plan on going in 2005.The main reason I am typing this is because JD was there with their Worksite Pro line up,the skid steers, mini excavators, and yep,the 110, fully equipped just the way I ordered mine, the cool thing about it though was that JD had the engineer who led the 110 project there to answer questions,so I talked to him for about 2+ hours and he went over the whole machine w/me,front to back. This machine is just incedible, the engineering that has gone into it is rediculous,it has all the full size TLB features and a few more to boot.It does have the ability to run hydraulic skid steer attachments off the front, like a broom or power rake,or hammer, and the hoe also has the power to run a hammer. He told me soooo much stuff its hard to remember it all,if any of ya have any questions, start askin'!

Whats the breakdown on the three hyd. pumps and there function? Also when I had a tractor priced, the quick change buckets for the backhoe where a lot more than the pin on type. Seems once you pay for whatever goes on the hoe to make it quick change extra buckets should not all be so high priced? Quote I received for two quick change buckets was 1,150 for 12" & 1,225 for 24".

Mike,
If I recall correctly I was told that one pump runs the tranny, one runs the power steering, and the last runs the hoe, loader, and aux. hydraulic functions.I'm 90% sure this is what the engineer from JD told me.About the buckets.......I don't have the pricing in front of me but those sound about right give or take $100,but I do agree they are a bit pricey for that size bucket,I also know for a fact that a company called Weldco-Beales Mfg. (www.weldco-beales.com)makes the coupler and buckets for Deere(they are the same ones they use on their mini excavators)and they will sell direct to you,I'm not sure if the pricing will be better or not but it is another option, from my experience though you can't beat being able to switch from one bucket to the other w/out a greasey mess, and it also allows you to work more efficently by matching the bucket to the job.

One more thing that is worth mentioning.........the machine at the show had a pretty substantial skid plate installed from just behind the loader towers to the back,I asked about it and was told it was a severe service skid plate and the engineer said he felt it was an invaluable option to request being that it protects ALL of the hydraulics and valving for the machine.I inquired about at the dealer and they got back to me today and told me list price was $418 but they could sell it to me for $318 and possibly install it for no charge, like I said it is a serious skid plate and is well worth the extra duckets, hope this helps.

Tags,

Boy, spending 2 hours with the lead engineer of the 110 must make it all that much harder waiting on your machine. Awful good opportunity to learn the kinds of stuff you don’t find in the brochures. The skid plate sounds like a no brainer for the price. With the FOPS and the skid plate you have the making of a pretty nice machine for light logging. I can’t wait for yours to come in and hear what you have to say.

Was moving some brush piles with Brutus one day, upon backing up and preparing to go forward, I notieced my hoe lying on the ground, lifeless. I pulled lever to lift it and OH MY..the spray of fluid was impressive...seems I'd driven over a 4 inch or so log, maybe 3 feet or so long..tire pushed down on one side, other came and ran right through all my plumbing.

Fortunately for me, only one hose was damaged. The vulnerability that I then realized I had really made me more aware the next time I was working the same area...

I LOVE the idea of this kind of skid plate.
