John Deere 310 A hydraulics quit!

   / John Deere 310 A hydraulics quit! #41
How old is this machine? My 1974 had one pump, a wonderful design, radial 8 piston. No connecting rods, pistons pushed inward by springs toward a pressurized crank case, the shaft powered by a coupler from the engine crank had a cam. this pushed each piston in its turn outboard moving oil. As pressure rose in center case, springs weren't able to push them in. A very energy efficient system. After buying mine, topping it up with oil, i drove it part of 10 miles home, until it stopped in the road. Traffic heavy, adrenaline pumping, buyers remorse flooding over me, I rushed around like a madman. Oil was a little low, A friend came along gave me a ride, I bought oil put it in and drove home without further insident. Later hydraulics didn't work well when warm.

No one seemed willing or able to diagnose. finally someone suggested an infrared camera. Starting a cold tractor, fluid should not flow. Infrared lets you see where it is going. In my case the used backhoe showed little wear, I soon learned why, a defective since new valve rendered the tractor useless after the first 40 minutes. Hoe worked with little power, loader took about 60 seconds to lift to full height. A new valve made it a great tractor.
