John Deere 4300 complete rebuild

My 4400 has no springs in the fuel cap door. It will flip up when I transport it on the tractor sometimes, or if I go over 40 MPH backwards.... Just one pin. Let me know if you need a pic to clarify.

BTW-I have no "clips" but 2 springs.

Nice pix, Kenny. Thx for posting. I see how the springs go in now. My
hood looks like it will only accommodate one spring that way as the molding
is different. On one of your photos, I highlighted the two parts that hold
one side of your springs. I only have one of those hoops in the plastic!

I sure do not see how the clips go in. Matt: does yours have clips? Wayne:
I see how nothing holds the door on if you do not do something to secure
it. It seems one little bump and your door flies off. :(

This is what happens when you have to depend on the parts diagrams to
buy and assemble parts that you never had before. Note: the remaining
rental 4300s often do not have such "optional" parts as the fuel door.

So, is the hood mounted on the tractor yet? Do you have any pictures of the thing together? This thread inspired me to fix a tractor myself so today im getting a Simplicity 9518 to fix up. I cant wait.

Here I have rebuilt my joystick control for the FEL valves (SCV). I
suspect that many tractor makers are moving to the fully enclosed and
sometimes cable-operated mechanisms here. It is vey hard to get
proper lubrication in there, so after 500-1000 hrs, your joystick gets
really sloppy. Here is the good news: the replacement parts are
actually reasonably priced. The two tie rods are $13 ea and have rubber
booted ball joints. I also replaced my main stepped pivot shaft, guide,
and lock nut. The 2nd (blurry) photo shows these critical new parts.

I am amazed at how tightly the joystick works now. $50 well-spent here,
IMO. I will mount this to the gearbox when I get my load of hyd fittings
that I have ordered.

Here is pretty much where I am as of yesterday. I am still screwing
around with the wiring harness. It has to go into some pretty tight
places. The instrument panel has been renewed with new glass and I
have been successful making the black guage backgorund look MUCH
better. The manual said use alcohol, but that left it looking very
cloudy and dull. I experimented with Armor-all and it worked great.
I sure hope the instruments work....a new panel costs too much.

I have also straightened the bent foot step and FEL hardline support
bracket. They must have taken an impact or two...

Here is the footstep 'before' picture. I used the press to tweak it
back into shape.

I sure do not see how the clips go in. Matt: does yours have clips?

Mine doesn't have springs, and there is a black plastic clip of some kind covering the gap where you've added the yellow lines to your picture. My fuel door is front hinged and flaps like a rain cap on an exhaust stack.

KennyD: What is that black plastic gizmo in the middle of your fuel door for?

I've got two clips that go in from the bottom which hold everything in place. I hope thse pics clarify that.
