John Deere 4300 complete rebuild

Dave:

Yes, now that you mention it, I do recall that! Not like my 7.3 IDI which really needs GP's to start. These seem to spin over plenty fast enough at least on my machine I've never had to "push" the botton in to preheat the air.

Keep the pictures coming! Are you going to sell it on Flee Bay? I've had some luck with that.

Just think, in a few years you can go buy one of those used up, wore out, broken Bobcats and restore it here on this forum!

Thx, Keith. It looks like they get about 8 years of life out of their tractors...
I remember when these 4300s were all shiney and new. I got my first
tractor this way, back in the mid 90s while I was building my house. They
were Kubota L2550DTs back then...I got a lot of use out of that Kubota,
until I replaced it as my main tractor with the JD955. Neither of those
machines needed so much work. The Kubotas just had a bunch of bent
up body panels, and the 955s needed new engines.

I just saw my first tractor the other day...it is still running well with
about 2400 hr on it. The owner (now 86) shares it with his son.

BTW, I think your JD790 uses a Yanmar engine WITH glow plugs and
indirect injection, correct?

As for selling it, I have a lot to do yet (backhoe subframe) and I will use
it for a while first. I will offer it up word-of-mouth initially come spring.

Dave, I'm pretty sure that the 790 has direct injection. As for cold weather starting, it's equipped with an air intake heater. In the year that I've owned this tractor, I can't recall ever having to use the heater but then again I'm in SC. It usually doesn't get very cold here.

It's pretty neat that you can keep up with your first tractor. It's easy to get attached to them! :) Don't know where my first tractor is, but I do know where my second one is at.

When you get ready to sell the 4300, are you gonna let the rental yard have first shot at it?? They might want to see if they can get another 8 years out of it! :D

OK, it's been more than a week, and I have had tree issues to deal with.

I did order a new fuel level sender, and installed it ($55 total cost). It
is certainly different from my early dead unit, which looks like a prototype.
I tested the new one before I put it in.

I went analog on the hour meter, now installed ($15). I could have bought
a used panel for $75, but the hours would be wrong. Better to start this
tractor's rebirth at 0 hours.

Was the turn signal switch lever missing when you bought it?

Yes, it was missing and the hole was plugged as you see it. I see no use
for turn signals on a tractor. If I take it out on the public road, I would
use emergency flashers. If you look closely, you can see I added a new
automotive signal flasher unit, and it is tied into the connector that was
used by the signal switch. I have all new rear lights, but they are not
mounted yet, as they go on the ROPS.

On my Kioti tractor, I use the turn signal switch to control front and rear
work light relays.

Is the Loader mounted yet?

Nope...I will make the hoe subframe with the loader off, most likely.

I am completing the new power beyond loop now, using 2 hoses and QDs,
instead of the factory hardlines. My loader will have all new hoses, which
I now have, along with my last big order of hyd fittings (over $200).

This board never ceases to amaze me! When I bought my 4200 just about two years ago, it had a new hood on it, (I didn't ask why) and the new fuel door was handed to me with a pin and a couple springs! So I sez to myself "Scotty, you can't go to TBN, and ask something as simple as how does this thing fasten on there!" I looked at it again, and again, and again...........! and it remains in my tractor paperwork pouch! Thanks guys! This place is like: "Listen, and Learn, 'Grasshopper'!" Thanks DFKrug for the amazing Photo-Documentary!!! Your work is awesome!!! ~Scotty

Quest- Why the sub frame for the BH mount and not use the TransAxel plates that JD uses for mounting a dedicated JD Model 47 Backhoe attachment? Or, are you custom fabbing a mount for a hoe (other than TPH) that you already own? I may have missed that in your novel! :D

There no such thing as a stupid question-just stupid answers and he has not replied to this thread yet I don't think...
