Is this similar to the R1W radial tire you are looking at - they are spendy!

IMO seems a lot of $ to change wheels/tires, but don't have an opinion on the differences between these other than you will be lower and wider which if you fill them will make a difference.

I was looking at something like this:

But I've been going round in circles, trying to find tires and wheels that lower the CG.
Original tires is 12.4-28 R1 which has mounted diameter of 49.6". I want to lower the CG several inches.
Can't do it with 28"
What about 24"? Well...most 24" have a similar diameter to the 28". The Galaxy R4 tire above has mounted dia. of 48.4", so that would lower by about 2% or less than 1". It will be wider, but hardly worth the trouble. Much easier to just buy some spacers.

These are just rough numbers as the loaded radius or rolling circumference are what is really important. Tires will compress more or less depending of contruction, type, load, etc. but you can't find loaded radius or circ for all tires easily.

Narrow 20 and 24" R-1 tires or short enough but load rating is too low for a 8-9k lb tractor. Would need duals.

Totally agree - and I would be going round in circles too after looking at all the options. None that "fit" for weight and load don't do much for your CG.

Have you looked at the front options yet? I'm sure you know the fronts/rears are matched circumference for 4WD operation, and that would be my first consideration on what sizes work to match what you have. BTW have you considered R4 industrial - they are lower profile typically.

Frankly the existing tires look decent, and wheels too, so just repaint and if you haven't filled the tires, maybe that would buy you more in lowering the CG than new rims and tires? And save you $2K!

What have I done.
Decided it would be prudent to check the rear diff as I am only 8 bolts (hydraulic tank) away, and you have to have the axles off to adjust. So pull the top tank off.

Everything is in order. That's the good.
Problem is the diff needs adjusted. When I try to adjust, I run out of backlash, so the pinion needs shims removed. As far as I can tell the shims are only accessible by splitting the tractor between rear and mid.
So I'll have a busy day tomorrow.

Is that red marking paint on the ring gear and it seems there is a shadow on the gear where its meshing or is that just the picture? How much play is there, and will shims make a difference?

Meaning can you move the pinion shaft with a large screwdriver or a thin bar into the pinion and see what the play is?

I always wipe the ring gear clean and use Prussian Blue to get a good reading (better contrast). If there is a reading on your ring gear I can't see it.

Pinion is already shimmed away .080" from factory.
DRIVEN SIDE: engagement is at the very inside tip of ring gear

COAST SIDE

I can't shim any further. It seems something on the shaft is limiting the movement.

So I'm kinda stuck. There's very little wear on ring and pinion, but the hours are fairly low on the tractor. Do I leave as is with less that optimum engagement or dig in further and fix it right?

Is #13 your shims? Looks like you are pretty limited as to what you can do. Is the #8 bearing retainer is holding you back? Maybe you can shim it?
