My biggest problem with tomatoes has not been animals, but blight and red spiders; the Heritage tomatoes do not fare well in this regard. I now buy varieties that are resistant; Super Fantastic is my favorite, followed by Celebrity and maybe a couple cherry or pear tomatoes. I bought a couple of the cluster type tomatoes this year to see how they would do; so far they look better than the rest. We shall see. With the weather warming up, they should take off big time now.

Try hanging a few red glass Christmas ornaments on each plant. The birds will peck, then lose interest when they see they're not real.

My dogs were eating the green ones. We gave up and go to the farmers market.

Hah! Smart man. That's where we get most of our fresh veggies.

If you smoke or use tobacco in any form your tomatoes will not be likely to thrive, tobacco mosaic virus will also persist in the soil for a long time. I raise mine in a different location or in sanitized pots each year. I also keep tobacco using friends away from my tomato patch and greenhouse. Spider mites can be controlled by spaying, I fortunately have not had much problem with them (yet).
We have had some problems in the past with early blight, if you trim the lower leaves up so that they are at least eight inches above the ground or out of rain drop splash range, that will help to minimize the problem. Good air circulation helps as well.

My dogs were eating the green ones. We gave up and go to the farmers market.

One year we were not getting any ripe tomatoes at all and we had about 20 plants. Lots of green ones but none got ripe. One day I saw my pointer walking up and down the rows looking at the tomatoes. He found a ripe one and picked it very gently and walked out of the garden and ate it. I tied the dog and got ripe tomatoes. Moral of the story when you throw rotten tomatoes out of the garden don't let your dog catch them he might decide he likes them. Ed

We learned the dogs were stealing tomatoes when they came in with "pepper breath" or "tomato breath". That's when the cattle panels went up.

Even so, we grow hundreds of pounds of peppers and tomatoes for the dogs every year and they love them. Sometimes fresh, sometimes cooked and wife cooks and freezes some for later in the year. We pour it over their dog food.
