Kerosene vs propane

My experience has been that the kerosene heaters throw out much more heat. I had 2 with similar btu ratings and the kerosene version was an order of magnatude hotter.

I use a diesel/kero salamander in my garage, works great. I figured in my area it's easier to get diesel or kero then it is to mess with a propane tank.

As you know, a BTU is a unit of measurement. So, that should not be the case.

Perhaps there is a difference in fan size that caused the air to feel warmer, or cooler at a given distance. Perhaps one heater did not work as advertised. Or, perhaps you compared the input rating, and not the output rating. There will be a difference there, from manufacturer, to manufacturer.

25,000 btu's is like 25,000 feet of distance, it's the same amount, no matter how it is produced.

I have a kerosene heater - salamander style. Works OK for my shop size - roughly 22x26 feet. But it is noisy and smelly. A tank last about 4-5 hours roughly. And it needs electricity to run.

I am considering going to propane less noise and no smell I hope. The shop is not tight by any means and I usually keep a door or window slightly open. And the unit is non-electric.

Without a noisy fan using expensive electricity, Kero doesn't propel heat very far nor very fast. That's a down side.

LP tanks can be a bit cumbersome. That is their down side.

Not sure but I've never seen high btu propane units in that salamander configuration, the kero ones go over 200,000 btu.
.

I have a 400,000 btu propane LB White.

It'll warm you up. :)

I prefer propane but I have several of both and each kind of has it's place.

For the barn I would use kero.

If you are looking for localized heat, I have a 35,000 btu kerosene that I use like JB mentioned. It's cheap to run but it'll keep you warm. I've got a couple of each, but for enclosed area's, I use the propane. I think some people here are confusing kerosene salamanders with kerosun heaters.

Well had to do something, Lowe's all out, Home Depot out and I was able to get the last one at Tractor Supply. Ended up with a Mr Heater 125000 btu forced air kerosene. I think that this unit will fit our needs. Thanks all for the input.

Good choice. I use a 125k in a 2400 sf shop. It will burn kerosene or diesel, the latter is much more effiecient. Propanc, even with the same BTU rating seemed more localized. This unit, a DynaGLO Pro heats the shop, provides heat to work under a tractor, or can warm the alley of the horse barn. Drawbacks, noisy and smelly over time in an enclosed space with diesel.
