Fuel costs are near the lowest of operational expenses. We ask for donations but 90% of trail users won't help and most years we cover most of the costs. We do have a small group (4) who do help and hope to keep the trails going. One couple donated 1500+ this year so far. People like to tell themselves "the state must pay" or "there can't be much expenses here" to quantify them not donating. This winter we are running over 5K.

The recent snow totals
So how much snow did everyone get? The heaviest swath of snow stretched from the bottom of the Keweenaw Peninsula east into Marquette.

• In Baraga County, Mount Arvon - the state’s highest natural point - received 20 inches of snow
• Houghton County spots had nearly 16 inches
• Negaunee in Marquette County had 24 inches
• Ironwood clocked in with 15 inches

The winds were really something, too. Some of the U.P.‘s most far-flung places had really high winds. Isle Royale, an archipelago in northern Lake Superior - measured 59 mph winds. Stannard Rock, a lighthouse 24 miles from the mainland, had a 66 mph gust. Marquette’s U.S. Coast Guard station measured 62 mph winds.

Here is the NWS summary of the March 5-6 Blizzard:

“Strong winter storm lifted through the Great Lakes Monday March 4 through Thursday morning. This produced freezing rain, rain, and then widespread heavy, wet snow, strong winds, and blizzard conditions.

“Widespread 6 to 24 inches of snow was observed across Upper Michigan as well as 35 to 50 mph winds. Highest storm total snow reported was 24 inches 2 miles from WFO MQT and the highest wind observed was 62 mph at the Marquette Coast Guard Station and 66 mph at the University of Michigan observation at Stannard Rock.

“WFO Marquette’s storm total snow was 22.7 inches. The office also set records for daily maximum QPF at 2.55 inches and daily snowfall 20.8 inches for March 5th. Blizzard conditions were observed for nearly 12 hours at KSAW.”

We got less than 24” of snow for the entire winter would be my estimate.

We are warm here today and might be the end of grooming. Here are photos taken this morning and past week.

A few more. We hit 50 here yesterday but skiing was wonderful.

The shove-ice mounds were massive at Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. Wind gusts kicked up to over 30mph so I couldn't fly very long or get the drone super close, but it was awesome to see these ice formations from the other side. Taken on 08 March 2025

When I lived in Maine, a line item on your property taxes was for snowmobile trail maintenance. It wasn't much and we that--I'm guessing--was 1,000 ? miles of groomed trails that were simply beautiful.

Wife and I could get on our sleds at the house and go 40 miles to breakfast on groomed trails and across a large river on a suspension bridge for sleds. Do that once and you will crave snowstorms.

EDIT--I wasn't sure on the miles so I just looked. Maine has 10,000 ! miles of snowsled trails. Even better, it usually stays cold enough so the new snow just layered on top of the old snow so you could get a great base. In spring if you sliced the snow you could see the accumulated snow like sedimentary rock. Not always, but usually.

A few more pics for you guys. I was in Calumet yesterday and took these. Top one is there snow storage at there school. Bottom one is the former C&H power plant where I was buying steel at. I'll post more later.

Near Houghton, this ditch was scooped out to help melt water get to culverts. Our snow has really gone down!

Might see more? Now I need to get our atv's push frame completed.

We received about 6" at my house yesterday. 9am was rain. 10am the started. And didn't stop until 5pm. Wet heavy snow. Luckily we are retired so no need to go for a drive. It'll melt. Jon
