Cutting roofs does run the risk of hitting nails, which someone mentioned earlier can be dangerous. However, standing on top of a house that's on fire and cutting holes in the roof you're standing on isn't what most people would call safe either. You could slip and fall off the roof (not good) or fall through the roof into the fire (really bad) or any number of other things that can hurt you in unpleasant ways. That's what they pay us for...

Pay?? Around here in Wayne County (just a couple counties north of you) almost all the fire fighters are volunteers. They need to ask the voters for money just like the schools.

They had a bake sale at one of our football games. The advertising line over the P.A. went something like "If you come to our sale, we'll come to your fire!" They sold out of cookies in short order. :)

I wouldn't use the term super dangerous. I have hit many and it just cuts right thru them. The chain teeth don't fare too well though and I need to stop and work the chain over before I can proceed.

You are pretty lucky, my friend, a professional forester, lost his leg doing what you don't think is super dangerous......

I've also had two chains break off my Husky 372XP with 28" bar and Super 72 LP chain the exact millisecond they came in contact with an embedded nail in a tree trunk.

Anyone who thinks that chain sawing through nails in trees is not hazardous or dangerous to your health is not thinking well....
