Killing LARGE Vines

I haven't found anything yet that tordon RTU applied to a freshly cut stump hasn't killed. I buy in quart bottles and it lasts a couple of years. Originally I bought a heavy duty cleaning spray bottle to put it in but the spray nozzle actually screws directly to the product bottle, so I use it that way. It also has a blue dye so you can see what has been hit, which is useful if your applying it to a lot of small stumps.

Do a basal application on the stumps: 50/50 diesel and Crossbow, then paint the fresh stump. A pint of concentrate will treat 100 stumps, and there will be no need to spray poison around.

I have some LARGE vines up to 3 inch in diameter (some kudzu, some ivy and some unknown) . Plan to cut them off near the ground and spray when they start to green up. The question is if I pull the vines from the trees will any pieces that break and fall off take root?

No Kudzu in Indiana but plenty big wild grape vines. I just cut them with a chainsaw, they die, and eventually gravity pulls them out the trees. IMO it's a waste of time & dollars to use herbicides or manually pull them out of the trees. No chance of the pieces taking root since they wont fall out of the tress until completely dead/dried up.

Best way to kill almost anything is to cut and paint. Paint immediately after cutting with glyphosate (active ingredient in Roundup).

Any vine left hanging will die and eventually fall apart and fall down.

But be very careful if you burn POISON ivy. The smoke may expose not only the skin to the chemical but also the nasal passages, throat, and lungs. Inhaled urushiol can cause a very serious allergic reaction.

Inhaled it can be fatal. I never burn anything poison.

The good thing for me is, I don't have any. We have a vine here called, Virginia Creeper, which is a dead ringer for poison ivy, but doesn't have the urishiol.

This method of "painting" the fresh cut stumps works especially well, and on any size stump/vine.
Glysphosate works, and is less expensive, but the very best is Gordon's Brush Killer with 2-4D.

Yep. Glysophate is designed for foliar application, and works best that way. For stumps, a 2-4D product is much better.

We have a vine here called, Virginia Creeper, which is a dead ringer for poison ivy, but doesn't have the urishiol.

Virginia creeper has 5 leaves; poison ivy has 3 leaves and the larger vines are 'hairy'.

Well, whatever we have is 3 leaved with hairy vines, a dead ringer for poison ivy, and doesn't bother anybody. 12 years on the property and not one bit of rash. And yes, I know for sure my sons are not resistant to it because they have gotten poison ivy while on camping trips elsewhere.

If it's not Virginia Creeper I'd love to know what it is.

How to tell that it's not poison ivy: Always start by counting the leaflets. Virginia Creeper will have 3, 5, or 7 leaflets (occasionally more) which means it's not poison ivy.

In the photo on the left, notice that the vine has a leaf that is a group of 3 leaflets. This is what generally throws people off and makes them think it is poison ivy. However, that leaf is attached to a vine that has other leaves growing on it that have 4 or 5 leaflets, so it can't be poison ivy.

Interesting. I'm with you and would love to know what it is too. I always assumed hairy vine meant poison ivy.
