After all the holes were drilled and tapped, the mounting strap was bolted on. Then the extinguisher mounted.




I sure hope I never have to use it, but in the event there is an incident, I know it's there ready for action. Sometimes having something quick and easy early on can avoid a major catastrophe.

LARRY: You still amaze me with your talent and forsight in solving problems. The rebuilding of the Komatsu D20A-6 still amazes me of the ability of you and Rob, for that challenge! With pictures showing all the processes in the restoration, plus the additional improvements is classic; and very helpful to others who may want to purchase a similar tractor in the future?

You maybe getting a call from Komatsu, or a publishing company to write a repair manual......trouble shooting, and etc. in the future, with the picture of your tractor on the cover!? Then sit back when all the profits flow in from the book sales? I really enjoy seeing all the progress with the tractor too, and the trailer dump system is time and labor saving!

I wish - Here is a little secret about Komatsu's - Contact your dealer, open an account, then ask them to register your machine, then go on-line to mykomatsu.com add your machine and viola you have instant on-line access to the complete parts breakdown and part number manual, for FREE. Not only that you can simply click on a part# to add it to a shopping cart, then order on-line. I was amazed how convenient their service is. I was able to convert every single part illustration into an adobe doc then save to my hard drive. I now have an electronic illustrated parts list for every single part on the dozer, from a complete illustration and breakdown of all engine components right down to the smallest nut, bolt and washer for the tracks.

Of course the image quality is better before I saved them a jpeg file format AND you can zoom in on any part.

That just might be one of the reasons I see so many Komatsu machines out there. They really do seem to be about the most common name around. I've never been on one of them, but would consider them as a top brand when buying.

I love the ability to look up the parts and order them online. Just seeing how they go together can save hours in figureing out a broken part and how it comes apart!!!!

Sears does the same thing with thier lawn mowers, and maybe other stuff too. It's very easy to order a replacement pully or belt from them. I just wish New Holland and Case would do the same thing!!!!!!!

I'm so surprised not more companies are doing this. It would save a ton of costs just by having people looking up their own parts. I bet the service departments are distracted a million time a day with people asking how things come apart or go back together. Let alone chasing down part numbers.

Small update on what Me and the little Komatsu have been up to lately -

Using the dozer & tractor as a team, I collected all the stumps littered along the sides of the new road. I had just finished hauling up the last load of fill dirt for the hairpin turn with the dozer when I decided to fill the trailer with stumps before heading back down. Most of the stumps were light enough to toss into the trailer by hand, but a few were fairly large ,so the grapple was used to pick them up. Here are a few photos of what I was doing this past weekend.

After over filling the trailer, I then thought what the heck am I going to do with all these ??? Because it's so dry, burning them is out of the question. So I just dumped them into a gully and pushed a little dirt over them and called it good.

I was reviewing this thread and discovered I did not document the install of some ammo boxes or the rear view mirrors. You all probably saw them in various action shots? I thought I would post a few pics to show the detail on how they were mounted. First the ammo boxes:



When Rob (3RRL) & Loretta came to visit, I took them to Surplus City in Albuquerque, a huge surplus store with just about everything you could imagine. While they were browsing around, I picked up a couple of ammo boxes and some mirrors for the Dozer.

Rob helped me layout the holes to be drilled in the bottom of the boxes for mounting. After we drilled them out and checked for fit, They got primed and painted with a close matching Komatsu Dozer yellow. There is a plate with tapped holes underneath the boxes. Those plates were for the OEM canopy that at one time was removed and replaced with a very beefy aftermarket ROPS, so those tapped plates were just the place to mount the boxes. In them I store, gloves, sunglasses, gate remote, coffee thermos & bottled water etc. They are pretty handy as they can be opened and accessed while sitting on the dozer or standing besides it.

These 8" convex mirrors are a great addition to any Dozer or tractor. They sure do come in handy when backing up. I've been using the dozer to haul around a dump trailer, with some practice, I have learned to use them efficiently. For the most part I no longer have to turn around to look when while backing up. The is no vibration in the image so the view is clear and large enough for ease of use. With a quick glance I can see what is just about to get flattened by running over it back wards. They were attached to the top hand rail mounting bolt.

LARRY: I am considering purchasing some acreage in the Cascade Range of the Pacific Nortwest, and after following your site here, I have been looking at the Komatsu tractors with similar 40hp engine?

I believe the elevation of my acreage would be similar to yours, (5000'+-) elevation? The question is: Will your engine "bog down" under a full load, or still spin the tracks in the lowest gear at your highest ranch altitude? I have also spotted one with a LP engine on rubber tracks, that was used in a logging environment; the same model as yours, I think? Any thoughts on the LP engines, or rubber tracks? I know LP has less BTU's/unit volume than diesel fuel, and know nothing else about it's performance. The use would be similar to yours, with light road construction and fire prevention for the summer months there?
