Kubota B Series - Service It Yourself

GOOD JOB BP!!!:thumbsup: I did mt first fifty on my F3080 last week. Bought it in June 2010. Was going to picture doing it but so few Fs.
My biggest problem was finding my hyd filter. I had done my F2680 last fall so I knew the filter was super easy but I couldn't remember where it was. There is a check and fill lid for hyd (SUDT) right between legs in front of seat. No filter there. I'm crawling and looking every where and was about to give up.:(:( Alas, I looked under/behind the seat and there it was. Slide the seat forward (seat was hard to slide) and right there is the hyd filter.
Greased my deck and 4wd drive shaft and the rest of the tractor and squirted graphite on the seat track.
I to took the oil filter off first for the same reason as you, starting from top down. F3080 has two drain plugs on bottom of oil pan facing toward the front of the tractor.
As you, I encourage everyone thta can get down on their back to do their own service to learn their machine and save alot of money. Your kids or grand kids or neighbor kid could/can do the ground work if you can't get down or should I say can't get back up, when you get down.
I use an air powered grease gun. Came from Sears years ago and had it on a shelf in the box for years until I finally got it out one day. It's handy.
I used Mystic? 80-140 gear oil in my mowing deck, only took a small amount. I used one of the discount coupons from Fatwallet.com at Advance Auto and bought the gear oil there trying to come up with a large enough purchase to use the coupon. I had read the owners manual for my deck and it said change the gear oil on the deck at 50 and the next scheduled time will probably be after I'm dead, it's so long away. Surprised me that it is to be changed so early. Glad I read the deck service manual, I guess.
Again, great write up and pictures.:thumbsup:

JT, thanks. Your BX thread inspired this one, frankly. Never gave a moment's thought to doing a pictorial. When I saw your column, I realized this stuff seems to be quite helpful to other folks and that is really all the motivation in doing it.

ericher69, you're a better mechanic than I am, I'm sure. I just know of no way to pre-fill a horizontal filter with oil and then install it, all the while fighting an obstructing radiator hose. But, sincerely, your step by step is worthy of guys following, as they can. Thanks.

Thank you very much, this is a very helpful thread. I will add this to my favorites. I need to do all of this.

This is what most of us first time tractor owners need
Thanks again,
Gordo

Update: on post 17, I've updated the HST filter change. I actually did the deed this morning. Piece of cake, and only lost a pint and a half, tops.

I don't know what the labor cost savings from having the dealer do this would be, but not even counting the transportation to and from, which is no small hassle and expense in itself, I imagine dealers charge a couple hundred bucks, on top of materials for a job like this.

Seriously, if you change or have changed oil on a car, you can do this. On the scale of 1-10 in degree of difficulty, I would peg this entire thing at less than a 2. Some guys contend that servicing your own unit teaches you about your tractor and helps you become familiar with it. I suspect so.

So, if the weather clears up a bit, I believe I'll do one more thing as part of this one year (50 hour type) service. I think I'll give it a bath. It's pretty filthy from all the dirt work this summer. Probably check all my tire pressures as well.

Thanks for playing along and I hope this thread's has been encouraging.

nice tutorial, bp! A picture IS worth a thousand words.
Dumb question: Does 'do it yerself' void any warrantee? I know some require OEM parts/fluids, and mfrs will look for everyway to evade responsibilities.

Don't think you will find on any Warranty pages that service is required at a specific or authorized dealer. Just use Kubota parts/fluids for the warranty period and keep receipts. I write all my service dates/hours on the front of my owners manual or Orahge plastic holder/pocket for the owners manual. I also write the specific little details on the front of my folder with magic marker.
I keep my books inside the house and not in the box under the seat or on the back of the seat.
The only problem and it's a slight one, Kubota has a gorilla tighten all bolts except for the ones that are only hand tight then turned back two turns.:) Always check tire bolts and other bolts on a new tractor. Some times one or two aren't tightened on the assembly line but those that are tightened are "tightened".;)
Another always check on a new tractor is the fluid in the front axle on arrival and then again after several hours of use.

Bp fick

Not criticizing but...

Why would you change engine oil filter then engine oil?

I've always 1. Drained oil
2. Oil filter
3. New pre filled filter
4. Refilled sump

Am I missing something?

Thx
I'm not understanding this? What difference would it make which one happens first, draining pan or removing filter? Also, how can you prefill a filter that screws on horizontal and all the oil not drain out of it? I understand filter could be prefilled if the filter if threaded up from the bottom with threads on the top but not when they thread on the side of the engine block.

Very good post, we do the maintenance on all of our tractors and it saves quite a bit. I agree, it certainly doesn't take a mechanic to do this.

I also checked on the warranty and dealer service is not required.

Why are some folks loosing all or most of the hid fluid when they do this,,and you only lost 1 pint?,,' are people pulling the wrong filter?,,,,,,,BP are you doing the 50 hr service like you said in the OP ,,,or the 400hr service,,,that's why I asked about the front axle
