I'm not understanding this? What difference would it make which one happens first, draining pan or removing filter? Also, how can you prefill a filter that screws on horizontal and all the oil not drain out of it? I understand filter could be prefilled if the filter if threaded up from the bottom with threads on the top but not when they thread on the side of the engine block.

Pre-fill filter to top
Leave oil settle (will b about 1/2-3/4 full)
Thread filter on with little to no spillage
You have now minimized a possible dry start!

So all of the oil is pumped from the oil pan thru the filter into the engine/pistons area?

I don't pretend to know the route and direction of oil flow...

I have been taught by a diesel mechanic to always pre-fill filters as much as possible.

Even hydraulic and HST filters

Pre-filling a filter that holds a gallon, as some big diesel rigs do is likely wise, but on these itty bitty filters? I believe we're probably straining at gnats at this point.;)

And, since the topic of pre-filling filters gets beat to death over on Bob the Oil Guy and every other truck and motor forum, we'll assume those who might be interested in the subject can certainly find out more about it.

Don't know about all the Kubota manuals, but mine have only listed hours. That's it.
The auto makers generally state time use span in both, and I've seen it given only in months on homeowner equipment. Gotta use some common sense either way, I guess.

Thank you very much for this thread.

Appreciate it!

Agreed. I also changed out my front axle fluid with mobil 1 synthetic 75W90 when I first got the tractor. Agree with your philosophy about gear lube vs SUDT. I also run 4x4 alot, all the time in the winter months.

Great thread!

A convenient thing to note. When you use a grease gun it is nice to understand that the actual gun to zerks coupling is capable of being adjusted. There are knurls on the coupler (gun-side) so you can twist on or off.

When I did my first grease app on my L4400 I ended up with a bind on one of the zerks and broke it off. I didn't know at the time you could rotate the fitting coupler on the grease gun to loosen the connection and facilitate disconnect. Had I known it would've saved a hassle.

Make sure you re-tighten the coupling on the gun after loosing it when finished with that particular grease point.

Another thing. It's nice to have a 5 gallon pump on hand when changing quantities of fluid. You can get a fairly durable one at Harbor Freight for around 20 bucks. ONe note here. I can't figure out how to drain the fluid out of the pump once I'm done. If anyone knows how to remove the pressure lock in the hose to drain the fluid from the hose and out of the hand-pump, please post and let me know.

Keep up the good work guys!

Jon

Bp, why not re-rout the host? I took advantage of this summer and work on my Case that bugs me and now almost complete. Even welded handles to make entry/exit easier. I took out the deck plate in the cab, and cut it in 2 piece for easier access to the hoses below, prior to this cut the seat pedestal had to be remove and then the large piece of plate to manuver around to the doorway of the cab. I like the "king kong" verse when I first got this Case 580D I had to chisel the oil filter and buy a new oil pan plug. Snug is all that is needed for any filters and oil plugs. And, I agree use the oil you think is okay for you and run and work the tractor. Last but not least always use anti-size on fasteners that you might encounter again.

Great post. I did my own 50 hr service after I got a quote from my local dealer. In these economic times, I saved my self about $200.
