Kubota Hst Pedal vs John Deere Hst Pedals

You have to cross your legs like a woman to use the brake pedals to help with steering. :)

Not on my L40, you just use the cruise control for HST then right brakes as usual. Also the brakes are more toward the center and my son have no trouble using them comfortably. Some models are awkward though and Kubota is as previously mentioned transitioning to left side brakes so in the future it on't be an issue.

Initially I thought the Kubota was the better design, but I'm having a bit of a problem making the switch. I know the more I use the Kubota the better it will get. I go from using my whole foot, toe for forward and heel for reverse and I've tried completely moving my foot for the change. Both don't seam natural to me so far.

Tell me how you veteran Kubota Hst'ers use your pedal.....

I have big feet so I have had problems with the two petals!!! lol For the kubota petal, they won't show you this and with the right models barefoot or sandals might cause an issue. I ride with my heel on the floor behind the extended petal. When I want to back up I roll my foot to the right and bring it up under the petal and raise it for reverse unless backing a long distance. some petal bottoms are smooth and those are fine, some have the arm under the petal and that over time might be annoying but there are fixes for that.

I have never had to use the brake pedals to help steering. I have power steering. Does deere require brakes when turning? Do you use them?

Funny - ha, ha. Apparently you've never had that bota in slick enough conditions where the front wheels wanted to push rather than turn, or the rear implement pulls dramatically to one side requiring a steering brake to straighten things out. Fortunately you have power steering so you can save your strength to focus on that treadle.

No I have not but I can see where someone might use the brakes to turn the tractor in the slick mud. I have mostly sand and when it does rain I stay out of the blackland.

I use the steering brakes just about every time I use the tractor. Most times rototilling in a tight garden when I want to turn right back onto the garden with out jockeying back and forth. Many times in a marginal traction situation where I don't want to use the differential lock. Lots of the times when I'm grading with the fel and I don't want to gouge what I'm grading up against. There are all kinds of uses for turning brakes....if you can use them.

Thanks for the reply. I used tractor brakes ( not my tractor) for end of row turning before but it was a three wheeled old JD - B.

Don't worry, you're not alone. It seems that Kubota designers never have either!

A little note on brake steer. Have been selling ag tractors for over 40 years and I know everyone is entitled to an opinion. There is a difference between the tractors that people used to brake steer. Today many of the four wheel drives turn tighter then they did back then. A farmer would not brake steer a tractor with a loader. Saw help fired for that! The weight distribution is different with a four wheel drive, and it is even more so on a loader tractor. The main reason they don't brake steer is all the parts that wear quicker if not total premature failure from the brake steer. I really don't care if you do as it brings in more money for dealers! Thats me, so for those of you that know more then me keep it up! Dealers love you!!! Other wise do check the turning circle of the compact you are buying because there are some substantial differences!
