I think the "moral" of the story is that it is very good example of why a person should always check things out for themselves. Never make a decision based solely on other peoples' opinions. ;)

Just made the switch from a JD 4200 with Hst to a Kubota MX5800 Hst. I know the Hst pedals were completely different with the JD having 2 side by side pedals for forward and reverse and the Kubota having the single Hst front to back pedal.

Initially I thought the Kubota was the better design, but I'm having a bit of a problem making the switch. I know the more I use the Kubota the better it will get. I go from using my whole foot, toe for forward and heel for reverse and I've tried completely moving my foot for the change. Both don't seam natural to me so far.

Tell me how you veteran Kubota Hst'ers use your pedal.....

I'm the last guy to ask this question... I HATE MY HST B2320... Don't get me wrong, I love the tractor for what I bought it for, BUT I hate the hst pedal. Lifting my foot and engaging the pedal with my heel is such a foreign action, that I have to think about it constantly. My other tractors are geared, and I love them. All I can say is learn to use it, but you're never going to like it...

I actually don't know why they can't build a hybrid type of HST. My Kubota wheel loader has HST but has a gas peddle like a car that controls both oil flow and engine speed. Then a F N R lever on the left of the steering column . And a lever at the back to raise RPMs for stationary (backhoe) work.

If you have a machine that needs full RPM like a mower, then the normal system is great, but for other things, I like the arrangement I described much better.



Deere offered that a few years ago on the eHydro compacts in the form of AutoHST. They must not have sold too many, because the only time I've seen it is in old brochures. It was like your kobota loader, FNR on the column and "GO" pedal on the floor. The pedal controlled engine rpm and travel speed, with a separate throttle lever to maintain high rpm and low travel speed. It could have quite likely been the perfect HST control method... but, they put the brake on the same side as the go pedal like the kobotas of the time.

Way too much angst over which style pedal is better. Both styles are easy, just need some getting used to. Both are fine.

But isn't it some kind of angst - rather than which pedal is better - that actually sells people on their favorite tractors? And on almost everything else, too?

It would seem easy enough for tractor part manufacturers to offer different options in HST pedal style. After all, I can order all sorts of options on my new tractor. Different transmissions, lights, hydraulics, and even tires.

1.Since Kubota sells more CUTs than other brands that might imply that Kubotas style is better. I don’t think it is better, just different.

2. Agree totally. It would seem this is would be simple.

I'm not familiar with the HST pedal on the B2320 but on all the HST Kubota's I've owned (5) you don't have to lift your foot to change direction. Just lift the pedal with your toe:

I prefer the JD setup, less leg movement required, feels more intuitive and faster to me, and less pedal mix-ups especially when operating the machine in reverse.

As an aside the M59 pedal arrangement is just bonkers. Left side clutch and split brake on right side by the HST pedal...WTH?

Here's another HST gripe on the M59. The Hi-Low range shifter on the steering column is awesome. The Low-Medium-Hi lever is buried right next to the 3PH levers and easy to get mixed up when not looking. I think the 3PH lever should be a lot taller and/or different shape handle.

Why there is a separate HST range selector lever I don't have a clue. We should simply use the electronic Hi-Low lever on the steering column to be able to shift through the complete range of HST gears. The bigger tractors have it and so should the M59/M62 - they are certainly expensive enough to warrant it.

You have to cross your legs like a woman to use the brake pedals to help with steering. :)
