Kubota Hst Pedal vs John Deere Hst Pedals

A little note on brake steer. Have been selling ag tractors for over 40 years and I know everyone is entitled to an opinion. There is a difference between the tractors that people used to brake steer. Today many of the four wheel drives turn tighter then they did back then. A farmer would not brake steer a tractor with a loader. Saw help fired for that! The weight distribution is different with a four wheel drive, and it is even more so on a loader tractor. The main reason they don't brake steer is all the parts that wear quicker if not total premature failure from the brake steer. I really don't care if you do as it brings in more money for dealers! Thats me, so for those of you that know more then me keep it up! Dealers love you!!! Other wise do check the turning circle of the compact you are buying because there are some substantial differences!

If the wheels are turned and you are still going straight, a touch of a steering brake will get you around the corner. You don't have to mash it!

Most dealers balance a tractor so that would be an extremely rare time unless you are getting out of ruts. Your dealer will like you!!!! We see people and repair those tractors for those that don't know how.

I've used turning brakes inside buildings a lot. Putting my 300 gallon fuel tank on the stand. Helping a friend put an AC unit ontop of a room in his shop & later a heater in the shop itself. Really handy when doing lots of really tight turns in places only a few feet wider than your machine is long. Was 5 minutes & a 8 point turn with turning brakes, would have been double that at least without.

I occasionally use them for tight turns outside as well, but as noted FAA tractors tend to be balanced for agility pretty well already. I leave my brakes un-pined most of the time. With HST I really dont need brakes for stopping at all. I only use brakes for holding myself in place when stopped (usually only required when not in low range), or occasionally turning.

I dont use them much, but turning brakes are handy when needed. They do tear up the ground a lot more when you use them though, same with turning in 4wd. I avoid 4wd as well unless I need it for the same reason.

Don't worry, you're not alone. It seems that Kubota designers never have either!

I don't see the problem even if I did need to use the brakes for steering.
I have two wheels on the back that can brake.
I have two brake pedals.
I have two legs. If I don't want move my left leg to the right side of the open platform I can use my left hand and control the HST pedal through the cruise control lever as stated above and use my right leg for braking, and I have my left leg available to engage the clutch if I need to control the PTO or that left leg can engage the differential, while the left hand can control the switch to 4WD and the right hand the FEL to assist if I need it when stuck. Very well designed. :D

I grew up operating a John Deere B Tricycle. Do you think I ever needed to use steering brakes? Absolutely! I don't ever remember needing repair on the brakes. You sound like you advising never to use steering brakes. I happen to to think they are handy to use now and again.

So do I. And I plan on continuing using them when needed.

I also use steering brakes. Not sure what all the fuss is about?

The steering brakes are especially useful with light weight SCUT/CUTs. I’ve used them many times on my treddle operated right brake Kubota. Cruise control is nice to have for that reason alone.

I have never had to use the brake pedals to help steering. I have power steering. Does deere require brakes when turning? Do you use them?

Bring your tractor over on a really wet day, I'll put you in a predicament that'll make you cross your legs to use the rear brakes and sing like Mariah Carey while doing it. :)

Most farmers that row cropped know how to use the individual brakes at the end of the rows.

I use the steering brakes and don't see how I could get by without them.
When the tractor is pulling at close to full throttle - especially when pulling a plow or other ground-engaging implement - the front end can tend to get kinda light.
The front tires may look like they are getting in on the action, but in truth they are just barely skimming the ground. Yes, it has power steering, but that's not much use when the front end is getting light.
Running like that is pretty common with any tractor that is pulling hard. While it's happening the steering is mostly being done by the back tires - and that's what steering brakes are all about.
For those who don't use the wheel brakes..... I think you're missing a lot of fun.

And if the land slopes just a little bit....or the traction is a little different on the one side than the other.... then you use wheel brakes to keep the tractor going right and the rows straight.
