Kubota's sizing explained...

The X300 series John Deere mowers can be confusing. The X324 is 22hp. The 2305 is 24 hp, the 2320 is also 24 hp. The 2720 is 31.7 hp and the 3520 is 37hp. The 3720 is 44hp. i used to think the first 2 numbers were the hp but they are just to confuse you. The 20 at the end just says it is part of the 20 series aswell as the 4x10, 4x00, x55, x50 series. How i can remember all this by memory is a story all its own.

That pretty much extends throughout the JD product line and over many years. There have been so many models it probably just overwhelms any attempt at consistent naming, but you have to admire the die-hard JD fanatic's ability to internalize all those model designations.

I think the kubota naming convention is pretty easy. I like having the HP number in the model number, and being able to walk on a tractor lot and knowing the tractor size without having the manual. That's one of the reasons I first bought Kubota instead of a Deere.

What do you think will happen when they used 90 as a Series revision? Since they seem to go by increments of 10 in the numbering process.

Do they go to 5 numbers to account for a XX100? Or, do they change and start going by smaller increments?

Maybe they will do like CAT & JD on construction equipment and use a letter suffix. Lxx90B, Lxx90C, etc., followed by their transmission and cab designation. For example: L5290BHSTC--52 hp Grand L 90B series with HST & a cab.

Or maybe they will follow the automotive market and just develop a fixed model lineup and redesign it every few years without changing the model #.

To revisit the transmission side-bar, the DT is not synchronized, to the point that Kubota puts a sticker on the dash warning you to depress the clutch and fully stop the tractor before shifting. Having said that, I've found that you can double-clutch and it's smooth as silk going up through the gears, not so good going down. 4 high is a bit tall for starting away. 3 high is fine, then I make the jump from 3 to 4 on the fly.
