I have a a Grand L 3130 gear driven,I am not sure why people think hydro is better than gears for loading.I can run my tractor as good or even better than my brother who has a hydro when we are loading dirt.
I think hydro is nice if you are a girl :D .
Some people said the same thing about battery starters years ago...

I think this says more about your brother than the tractor.;)

Your gear tranny is a little different than whats in the L2800/3400, these trannys are non-syncronized basic old school gear boxes.
HST is the way to go with these two choices when doing lots of loader work.

Deweyant and others,

Please let me know where you are getting these quotes. I'm in the process of buying an L3400 2WD and I'm trying to talk the dealer down a bit. I live in Central Texas, but I'm just looking for dealers to get good quotes from for negotiating purposes. In the end if I have to pay shipping to have it brought in from elsewhere It won't bother me one bit since I will most likely be performing most of the maintenance myself anyway.

Just curious, what will you be using your tractor for?? I would not even consider 2wd on these size machines unless it was used for mowing only. With these tractor being so light the front wheel assist is what enables them to accomplish the task of larger/heavier 2 WD units.. Just my .02 cents :D

Just something to thing about when shopping. Good luck what ever route you take.. Chuck.

I have the L-2800DT and it does everything I want but I have not tried an HST. I know that it is a pain when you come to a hill and have to stop to shift gears when on a dirt road. I think you can shift gears on the go with the HST. I paid 14K for mine allmost four years ago, with the LA463 FL included.

The HST has 3 ranges but you can't change them while moving. The manual says not to, and it grinds if you are moving even slowly. You can change speeds with the HST pedal though, but only in the speed range your in.

Chuck,

Initially I'm only going to be using a 5ft Cutter with it for mowing 9 acres. After I get the weeds shorter than me :) I'm going to take a box blade and work on some areas that don't drain correctly and have some humps. After all of that is over in done with, in the far far future when I can afford a loader, I might get one to move some dirt around. Given Budget contraints, I'm going to get an L3400 2WD with Front Grill Guard and 4 weights to start with for now. Thoughts?

"L3400 2WD" How much difference is a L2800 DT with 4wd?? just wondering since I would opt for 4wd with lower hp... I don't know my prices but think it would be a better option.

I agree...I would for sure go with 4WD over HP.
