L3130 the Right Tractor? R1 vs. R4 Tires?

I run R4's on my 5030. I had turfs on my 3710 as well as my previous 3 Kubota's. The R4's give good traction and last a long time. If you are going to primarily mow with the unit, get the turf tires, the R4's will leave marks on your lawn.

Greg,
You've brought up an excellent point. The row spacing on the vineyard is something I have been researching. There were some test plantings done awhile back by the University of California in which they row spaced a vineyard with 8', 10', and 12' (which they say is the standard) rows. The yield was compared to "standard" 12' rows and the results indicated a significant increase where 8' and 10' spacing was used. The conclusion was to use 10' row spacing to accomodate the tractors. Interesting reading. Vineyard Spacing

""You might want to check your tractor width with your plans for your vinyard row spacing to make sure that everything fits for your planned use. Most folks around here use quite narrow tractors in their commercial vinyards. Maybe you can buy a narrow tractor at a later date? Also, note that the R1 tires will have more width adjustability than the R4 tires. Good luck with your project.""

I've got to disagree with you on tire spacing, I'm not sure about the L3130, but on my 5030 with R4's the tire/rim offset is adjustable. I'm in the house and not in the shop so I can't tell you the exact offsets, but there a 4 positions. The tractor shipped in the extreme inset position and I dismounted the rims and put them in the extreme offset position which was almost a foot wider that the shipped width. I can look in the manual tomorow and give you the exact offsets, but you can call your dealer and if they are knowledgable they should be able to tell you.

It dosen't matter whether you get R1's and I don't know what an R1 is or R4's, the offset is in the rim, not the tire. Looking directly at the brochure for the L3130, L3430, L3830, L4330, L4630 and L5030, on page 31, Optional tires are listed as "Galaxy, Turf Tire, Industrial (which is R4) and Agricultural Tire. There is no reference to R1. I'll stand to correction on any of the above points, however. I've included a picture of the butt end of my 5030 so you can see the R4's. The extreme offset is also evident

Daryl,
The standard tires are the ag's or R1's. The R4's, as you indicated, are also called Industrial Tires. The overall width of the R4 is significantly larger than the R1 - it looks to be near twice as wide. Being a sports car fanatic, I like the extra width - well for looks if nothing else. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Too bad the tractor won't fit in the garage. It would look pretty cool with it's stable mate.

After thinking about it last night, the "offset" of the rims IS very important. there is quite a bit of space inside the fenders when with standard Ag's (R1's) mounted to accomodate a wider (R4) tire, possibly without changing the width of the track. The width of the rear track will of course change depending on where you have the rims set.

I purchased the L3130 with the LA723 and the R4 tires. I use a 6' brush hog. My property is 5 acres - some very hilly and some flat. I live in the Northwest Washington area and we get a lot of rain. The R4 tires have worked out very well as they tend to stay on top of the mud and yet provide enough traction that I have never been stuck. The R4 tires also provide a little more stability on the hill sides.

I would definitely get the R4 tires and the heavier LA 723. There is nothing worse than under sizing your tractor. It is really a good deal to get the LA723; the difference in price is minimal.

Your Quoted purchase price is what I paid.

As I am a new property owner, I had a ton of cleanup work. Some of that work was using the Brush hog to remove some saplings. One to Two inch diameter is no problem. Again, I think the R4 tires spread the tractor weight so that running over cut off sapling reduces the chance of tire puncture.

I have been very pleased with this tractor. You will not regret the purchase. Enjoy.

Chris

Hey Chris,
I did decide to upgrade to the R4's and the L723. Also changed and went to a 6' Bush Hog Box Blade, but the dealer talked me out of the 6' cutter. Wound up going with the Bush Hog SQ600 (which is a 5 foot) with slip clutch. I'm driving down to the dealer tomorrow to sign the paperwork. Tractor is in stock, but the loader is a two week wait. Bummer. Oh well, I can't get over to the property for two weeks anyway. So it's probably safer at the dealer anyway.

My tractor does fit in the garage , that is why I went with the 5030 versus the "M" series which is considerably higher. I have an 8' high door that allows the tractor to be parked inside my machine shop where it enjoys heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. Actually, it clears the door header with about 5" to spare. I'll add a picture of it in the shop tomorow.

Daryl,
I hear ya bud! I'd love to park mine it the garage, but there are a couple of sports cars in there right now and I don't think they'll hold up as well as the Kubota if left outside. Man, I need a three car garage! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Of course the property is ONLY 105 miles from the house! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif So it's really not all that pratical to park at the house anyway!

Looking at getting a cover for the tractor. Anyone know if there are "stock" covers available that fit a 3130? Also looking at a Cover-It portable garage.

Keith,

I take it from the road sign that your property must be near Hochheim (how do you pronounce that? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif). It's heck living that far from your property, isn't it?

Do you have a house there, or someone to watch over your tractor? I would sure be worried about leaving my 25 year old tractor out where scofflaws could get their hands on it, so I leave mine in my f-i-l's shed about 5 miles away.
