L3901 Rear Wheel Adjustment-No Spacers Needed!!

Calcium chloride is what is recommended in the owners manual, why shouldn't this be used?

Our L3130 had (has) R-4 tires, filled with calcium chloride, and you could see issues starting with corrosion where the bead seated against the rim. I didn't like it.

So I thought I would share some info that may be helpful to others cause that's what we do here  Bought my L3901 in in the spring and have been very impressed with it. The only thing that I found troublesome was that it felt "tippy" :eek:on slopes whereas my older L2250 never really did. When I bought the tractor, I had them put R1's on it pre-delivery. Long story short, a call to the dealer (who I like very much) a month or two after delivery to inquire about the tire width adjustment which resulted in misinformation that you cannot adjust the rear wheels on the newer models and spacers were my only option.:(

Got a bunch of great info here on spacers and was prepared to pull the trigger next spring and drop $300 plus. Then, due to a member here letting me know that my dealer was incorrect and that the R1 rims are in fact adjustable; I went ahead and adjusted the tires myself and saved a chunk of money. I needed another set of hands because the tires are loaded, but it was a piece of cake. I have now gained an additional 7 inches of width and the stability increase is already noticeable just driving down the driveway. True test will be in the spring when brush hogging.

I tried attaching some before and after pics, but for some reason I have been unable to attach any pics here for awhile.

An additional 7 inches of width? Really. That seems like a lot. What is the overall width of your tractor with the rear wheels set to the widest position?

Our L3800 HST had R4 tires. As noted above, the rear wheels with the R4 tires could not be adjusted for more width. We put 4" spacers on each side and it made a big difference in stability. The rear wheels on our MX5800 with R4 tires are adjustable. We have them set as wide as they will go. Great for stability. The one caveat is that now the rear wheels will not fit between the fenders on a trailer with 78" between the fenders. The rear tires measure about 77" wide where the tires hit the ground but about 78.7" between the outsides of the side walls of the tires.

Yep, 7 inches. Exterior width is approx 63 inches.

Could someone provide a step by step instruction on increasing wheel width? I just bought a L3301 Kubota with R1 tires.

I can't provide step by step but you tell by the illustration from the owners manual how to mount them to get a wider width. At some point you may have swap the tires and wheels from side to side to get them wider. Be careful especially if your tires are loaded.

Basically you will unbolt the large outer rim from the inner hub and then move the mounting holes to a different set.

Set brake.
Break bolts loose. They are tight!
Jack wheel BARELY! off the ground.
Remove mounting bolts.
Turn outer ring to different set of mounting holes. CAREFUL! The tire/rim is heavy.
Reinstall bolts.
Tighten and torque nuts.
Recheck torque after initial drive around to verify still tight.

EDIT I had to go find my thread. It tells how I did this around post #32.

Awesome. I copied your #32 post with pictures.

I still don't understand how turning the outer ring gives wider spacing but since my rear wheels have fluid in them I probably will just take it into the dealer to have them do it.

If you look closely at the mounting points between the inner hub and outer ring, you’ll see they are off set. Look again at the previous picture posted showing the different mounting positions.
The outer Ring actually gets mounted further “out” from the centerline of the tractor.

CaCl should never be added to tires without tubes.
