L4400 vs MX5100 for landscaping... 2 questions

We use turfs and hydros on our 4wd Ford/NH 1520/1620/TC30. They all work great. We do gardening with the 1620, even sub soiling, and hardly ever spins picking potatoes with the sub soiler. When we spin, we just pick it up slightly, it frees the tractor, put it back down, keep goin. We did the same cultivating.

The tiller is no problem, nor is a bush hog. But when troubled, do what I explained.


The 1520 and TC30 cut grass with 72" mmds, on a slope, sideways, in mud, cutting tall grass, never spin with 4wd. The one time we did get it stuck we didn't engage 4wd and went in too far.

I think turfs/R4s would work fine for what he is describing.

Hydros aren't bad either, you heard the work we do with them.

Whats the approximate size and weight of the bales? Also are you referring to forks on the 3 point hitch as well?

I know everything is bigger in Tx... so, yea, how big are we talking? Have you checked your psi? $20 for the gauge and half that for the Quick Connect...

Edit: Rear 2870 lbs and the bucket Lift Capacity (500mm forward) 1356 lbs. There are a couple people using the L3400/L2800 lifting bales (just not in Texas )

According to my B-I-L who is a rancher and grows his own hay, a wet full sized bale can weight close to a ton. So clearly the L440o will not handle that sort of weight, at least not quickly or safely.

He will only handle bales with his 100+ HP Ag tractors.

I know an 800# bale seems to be close to double when wet, but you would think the 3PH would lift it anyway.

i dont know the size round bales your trying to pick up on the loader an 3pt.but i do know this your tractor will handle a 4 by 5 bale but anything bigger than that it aint lifting with the loader.i have the MX5100 HST 4x4 w/LA844 quicktatch loader an it lifts 5 by 6 bales with ease that weigh 1400lbs or more.

The bales are 1000# to 1200# The bucket comes off and the front forks quick connect to the loader arms. The back forks go on the 3 pt. hook up. This tractor won't budge on either set. I"m running an old Ford 3600 (1979) that will pick up the bales and haul down in pasture on back forks, but does not have front end loader. It is just a 45 HP and so is the Kubota. Guess I'll look at NH Ford
