L4630 vs. MX5000

Any thoughts on the relative merits of each? I expect to spend a lot of time on the tractor bush hogging, finish mowing, grading and leveling horse arenas, putting in fences, trail and wood lot maintenance on 60 fairly level acres.

I believe many will tell you that the biggest difference is the option of the HST transmission on the 4630. There are a lot of fans for that transmission here, including myself. Any reason you are not considering the 5030?

My position is that based on price and capabilities, that either the L4330 or the L5030 make more sense than an L4630. The 4630 is a 4330 with a higher rated RPM and therefore, slightly more HP. I don't know anything about hte MX5000. Good luck.

My highly biased opinion is of course the MX5000. Almost got an L4310, fortunately they didn't have one. Wound up with the Mx5000. I have had several instances where the extra hp. has come in handy and was very suprised at how well it handles. I do a lot of bush hogging, discing etc. and the extra hp. helps.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm trying to find the balance between the most HP for the buck and the ease of HST. The 5030 is just beyond my budget.

Good point. I've got some serious bush hogging to do so I'm leaning to more HP. I haven't used HST so I don't have a good idea of its worth over time. I'm used to an 8N.

I understand completely and I am going through the same thing. Looks to me like the MX5000 offers a lot of bang for the buck if it works for your needs and conditions.

I had an 8n for a long time too. My guess is that if you have not had a hydraulic drive tractor, you won't miss it. But you will really appreciate the power, weight, traction and overall ruggedness of the MX-5000. Yes it is a straight gear drive tractor - but all the money is going for muscle. The first time you need a little extra oomph, you'll be glad you've got it.

Thanks to all for your input. I got a chance to spend some time on a 4630 HST yesterday. I'm not kean on the pedal arrangement, but I like the idea of HST. The problem is using the brakes to make a tight turn. The MX5000 has more power for the buck but no HST. Someone suggested I look at the NH TC45 D with supersteer. Any thoughts? What should I be expected to pay? I could use a tight turning radius for working around paddocks and jumping rings. I think I'll post this on the general buying forum as well.

I don't know the street price of a TC45D with supersteer... but imagine it has to be higher $$$ than the Kubota 5030??
(the street price of a MX5000 is our area is $18.5 tractor & ~ $4k. loader)

With 60 acres, and wide open fields... I think the MX5000 would be ideal for ya... I'd stick with a utility sized tractor with that much property and wouldn't even consider a smaller hp compact unit...

Sometimes you just have to come up with a good compromise... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
