L5030 questions

Has anyone played around with the wheel width settings on an L5030? I have very hilly property and am considering upgrading to one of these machines, but the track width is very important to me for stability. I mostly interested in the R1 Ag tires.

Second question is about a rotary mower. What's the widest that a 5030 will handle? 6 foot? 7 foot? 8 foot?

About the Bush Hog

I know this, my dad has a 4x4 L3830 and it can handle a light duty 6ft. bush hog fairly well.

Mine handles a 7' Woods heavy duty easily. Of course this all depends on what you are cutting. I have no experience on widening.

If your looking for stability you should go with the R4s , the R4s put a lot of rubber on the gound and thats good for stability and traction my 5030 works great on everything even hills

A 7 foot would be my top width. An 8' brush mower would work, but it will really bog down in the heavier stuff. I run an 84" finish mower on my L3830 HST with very little issues. My neighbor runs a 6' Brush Hog on his identical tractor and it really loads up in the thicker and almost always wetter tall stuff. Stability on the hills is somewhat a matter of opinion. I found my L3830 to be OK on the hills, but because of the typical compacts design, a much higher center of gravity, it is simply no match for tractors like my old International 454. It was a saddle tractor that would be very, very difficult to roll. When on too steep of a hill (sideways), it simply slid down, with my Kubota, I never get to that comfort level.

My 5030 is set to maximum width. I agree that R4's put a good footprint on the ground. I have them. I use LOTS of care to properly weight front and/or rear when operating... on any ground. If you are on a very significant incline, you might want to consider a tilt meter.. regardless of which tractor you get. The tractor is not unduly tippy... but with FEL loaded with 1800lb round bale you better carry it low and slow, particularly on uneven ground.. with lots of rear weight and liquid in tires. I believe these comments are true, regardless of make.

I have been operating a 5030HSTC with both the FEL as well as a curtis 7 ft power angle snowblade. The R4's that it came with have been virtually useless in the snow, mud and ice.

They spin (in 2 or 4wd) very easily, and slide sideways on gentle slopes. Feeling oneself sliding sideways (all 4 wheels) down a slight grade is unsettling. I am switching to R1's for the more agressive tread bite, and having them set as wide as possible.

I now have the R1's on the tractor. I just put in several hours of snow plowing. The difference is night and day. Lots more traction and no sideways slipping.
