You know, just when i start to try and convience myself that LED shop and area lights might be ok....this happens.

Was called out to look at new Wenco parking lot cause some parking lot lights arnt working. These are less than 1-1/2 years old. Not only are 4 poles totally dead, the other 20 poles have at least half the lights burnt out. I refered the case back to the store owner so he could contact original contractor. 100,000 hour lights my butt. The old style metal halides would outlast the life of these lights

Now onto today. I was called out to look at a parking lot i installed led wallpacks on in nov 2013. One of the 85 watt (400 watt equivilent) fixtures is half dead. These are Eaton $550.00 fixtures with 100,000 hours warranty. Dead in 1-1/2 years not 20 years as advertised. Now the dealer will give me a free replacement... But doesnt cover my install labor (manlift, labor, travel).

As of now, i will not install another LED FIXTURE .... Ever.

What a total waste of my time. I have 400 watt metal halides running in my shop for over 4 years on original lamps.

just catching this thread....

is the circuit boards going bad? over heating? cooling down and heating back up and things coming apart on circuit board?

transformers in them going bad?

led lights them selves going bad?

is bad power to be blamed? to much amps or not enough amps, to many volts, not enough volts, wrong frequency / wave going to them via oscilloscope reading?

bugs, flying rodents?

When I built my pole barn 10 years ago, I couldn't decide what type lighting to use under the outside bays so I temporarily wired in five 100 watt fluorescent bulbs (curly type) staggered below the roof trusses. They are still working fine and so I replaced the 2 foot standard fluorescent tube fixtures in the shop with the single bulbs as well. No tubes for me and simple/cheap to change if they ever go out.

I hate flouro tubes in cold unheated buildings. They re just about usless for 1015 minutes in the winter.

I plan on installing led flood light bulbs every 8 feet in my 40x30 barn. My ceilings are about 12ft high so I have room for the light to spread.. I'm impressed with the floods I put outside and think they'll work fine.

Just had a 30x40 metal building built, for the time being I mounted 4 standard bulb sockets along the center of the cieling and one above the door.. just to hold me over till I put up the tube lights. Screwed in 300 watt bulbs and zingo.. lots of light and about $50 total outlay.. fluorescent tubes are on hold.. maybe forever!

I have a pole barn about 150 feet from the house. The barn has a wireless alarm system with the main alarm panel in our hallway. I replaced the recessed fixture bulbs with LED's. Come to find out the new LED bulbs interfered with the wireless signal from the barn as well as several other windows in the house. When I turned on the hallway LED lights I would get no response codes from the panel. When the lights were off, no problem. I learned an expensive lesson (I bought new sending units) that LED radio frequency can be a problem for other wireless applications. I am back to CFL bulbs with no problems with the alarm system. Something to check out.

What brand were the LED's?

Check this thread: No RFI from Cree LED's

I use 8' tubes in my barn and they are excellent. If your gonna run em' though you need to have the cold weather ones. they've been running 4 yrs now and I haven't replaced any yet.

I did have one of the fixtures fail but it wasn't anything to do with the tube lights , the ballast failed in the fixture itself. I am going to put a new ballast in it when I get the chance later.

Ours are great for our barn and put out plenty of light in all seasons.

Did you see my thread on replacing flourescents? No ballast, no problem.
