I have no idea what a "Purple" mattress is. I have had a "Tempur" memory foam mattress for the last 15 years and have always received a wonderful night's sleep. It continues to perform.

It's just the queen-sized mattress on a slat frame.

The Purple memory foam concerns me that it will stay firm like I need it as well as firm along the edges if we sit on it so we are strongly considering the Tuft and Needle King Nod on Amazon. It is a hybrid with foam and spring coils and coils along the edge if I want to put my socks on while sitting. $800

The edges are a little soft but I do sit and get dressed daily.

It's the latest rage in mattresses...

why would u be adjusting your air level every night? we have a sleep number, it works well for us
Because the End Of Life of a Sleep Number bed is when it has to be re-inflated every night.

I got tired of it. Repaired a couple times in 8 years. Went shopping pre-Covid just before the insanity started. Layed on a lot of mattresses. Bought a Sealy extra firm for about 1/3rd what I paid for the Sleep Number 8 years prior. Loved the Sleep Number first couple years, then started not to. Pretty happy with the Sealy.

sleep numbers, do not re-adjust, at least mine doesn't
They can not because you have to be in The Standard Position when the "number" is set. If not on the bed at all then inflate to your "number" then get on the bed it will be pegged at 100 but actual inflation much greater than that.

Here is a link to a site that is the best I have found for unbiased mattress info on the "Bed In A Box" sellers like Purple and the major manufacturers like Serta, Temperpedic, etc.: Welcome I rebuilt a Serta mattress that had deteriorated to the point of being unusable in two years using materials and information from a supplier sponsor on the website. It will take some time to go through all the info presented, but will pay off in a better night's sleep.

have a bad back as well. have had a waterbed since 1970.
cant ever remember having a bad nights sleep because of the bed. just the opposite
Had a GF that had a waterbed many years ago (90s), I never slept well on it. Too much motion and it didn't feel like it had any support. Plus it always seemed to be developing pinhole leaks. As I recall the electricity use for the heater was not trivial.
We've got some no-name foam mattress now (not memory) and it's fine. As far as one that's "warmer" or "cooler"...I don't think that would work for us. I only need one summer-weight blanket even in the dead of winter while my wife has multiple blankets on her side even in warm weather. No matter which kind we got it'll make things worse for one of us.

I think memory foam is just a wily way for a company to advertise a cheap mattress and make it sound good. Every memory foam mattress I have had looks like the cheap ones we had as kids after a couple of months. Reminds me of the mother's mattress in the movie Psycho with the huge indentation in the center.

I sure wish I could sleep like I did years ago. Most times I sleep good for about 3 hours and then I toss and turn the rest of the night. I have to get down to a local store/factory that has been making mattresses since 1929 and check them out. The prices can be high but maybe you get what you pay for. If the right mattress would allow me to sleep good, it would be well worth it.

Can you put a purple mattress on a bed that raises the head and foot?

We bought the Serta I Comfort with the cool gel about 6 years ago?
just before the 90 day trial was up we had them switch it out for the most firm version because it seemed to be losing support.

Thought it would be OK
Nope.

I now really dislike it...

Sleeping in the same place it sinks and then continues to sink. Seems like the gel migrates to.
Plus anywhere around the sides is not supportive

Not sure what is next but it will not be an I Comfort.

I know you said you don't want foam, but personal anecdote - we moved from a (queen size - didn't change that) $1k+ pillowtop 5 years ago to a foam mattress from Costco and have found it to be a vast improvement.

Even more important I found that by not using a pillow when I sleep on my back (I still use one when I side-sleep -- the pillow is smaller than I used to use) I no longer ever wake up with back pain that I didn't go to bed with, and even going to bed with a sore back it's usually better by morning.

If you look at what your posture is like lying on a pillow on your back in bed (hint: you look like a hunchback) it's no surprise that it's not good for you.

Main downside to this is increased snoring... but we both snore so she can't complain too much (and she always falls asleep first, and I have audio proof haha).

Unfortunately I do find the foam warmer. Some friends of mine bought a super fancy brand of foam mattress and apparently also got some special gel cover and they say it's cooler than their previous (hated) fancy pillowtop. While ours is warmer, it hasn't bothered me enough to get such a gel cover yet.

Many many years ago one of my doctors told me to use the smallest, thinest pillow possible to lessen back problems. It works. (y)

Unless you suffer from vertigo issues.
I have BPPV and it's easier to trigger without a pillow, but I still have to turn a bit farther than normal sleeping position. I suppose others' BPPV positions may not be as kind as mine (let me tell you, what a surprise the first time that happened! World was spinning all day!).

I get it occasionally. I roll over in bed and stop, but the room keeps spinning for 10-15 seconds. Fortunately, it reminds me of my drinking days and I find it quite pleasant. :)

I have that thing where the stuff in your inner ear crystallizes into little chunks on a shelf, then breaks free, falls off the shelf, and rolls around in your inner ear, making your brain think you are in motion when you're not.

I have mastered the Epley Maneuver. ;)

Epley helps, but I often feel sick for a day or so after I have the spins.
Sometimes even after doing the epley a couple times (yes I hold the positions for 45+ seconds etc to give the crystals time to settle) I'll still have a slight wobble going...

I couple of months ago I bought a Purple Mattress (original style, they have some new designs) and I have been extremely happy with it. The mattress sleeps cool and is very comfortable.
