Even sadder to see them long-neglected and falling down. I can understand somewhat though...farming has been on the decline here for decades, and maintaining those old barns is probably a low priority. I'd imagine just re-roofing one would cost a fortune!

It shouldn’t be! Cheap shelter is at a ridiculous premium in my area. A barn is looked at as valuable storage, so most get attention they need.
I have every leak-proof indoor storage space packed with feed hay.
It’s a lot cheaper to repair barns than rebuild them!

I am about to reroof a 1920 dairy barn. Gambrel, 36X62.

In the 70's. And that's before the metal comes off.

I was checking into building a 40 by 60 pole building but decided to repair the bank barn instead and it is much more useful to me now and will last for many years to come. The American Walnut beams from 200 years ago are worth saving.

Too many of these old barns are not kept up with roof leaks and if not repaired that will be the end of that barn. Many retired people do not have the means to repair and farmers will often build a more efficient structure for their needs leaving no funds left over for the old barn repair.

Agree! the old barns just do not work with today's larger equipment

Yeah. I was very fortunate to have found our dairy barn. It has 12 foot ceilings on the first floor. The loft area is at least another 30 feet clear in the middle. I was able to drive my small Kubota clear through it.

Still has the original hay hook. And it works.
