Log Splitter - How often tot change fluid and filter?

I had to remove the filter system from my splitter. It was on the return side but when I would jog the lever back and forth trying to get an oak to split, The filter would blow up. Splitter is a Northern Tool and it came with no filter. ???

Does it have a suction line strainer threaded into the tank?

Found manual on line my unit....It says to keep hydraulic fluid 1 inch below top of tank.... Guess it leaves room for expansion...

It has a separate fill fitting so I'm not sure if there is a strainer where the return hose hooks up. I haven't had that end off. I'll have to check.

Probably a plugged filter with no bypass valve. Put s new filter on and it should be fine.

The suction line strainers offered for my hydraulic reservoir (different sizes depending on the flow rate, in gallons per minute) , is a separate fitting, it's located where the supply line, that goes to the hydraulic pump attaches.

No by-pass valve, in the " filter assembly", you used, sounds like a good explanation for the filter explosion. However, The spec sheet on a filter head of the same size as my filter head talks about by-pass capabilities (couldn't find a data sheet on-line for the exact head I used), to confuse matters, the technical data for the spin on filter
I used, claims a working pressure of 175 psi but only 75 psi max, if non-bypass! Does the by-pass happen only in the filter head or the just the filter? My filter head and filter can as a package from the manufacturer.

Both are available, most auto oil filters have a bypass built in. Other filters vary.

I bought the filter and assembly from a farm store. i'm sure it has a bypass built in to the housing. I posted this on another site and a guy said that I can't pump the splitter handle while stuck in a piece of wood or the filter would blow. It did and it was new. Does this make sense? I' betting everyone with a splitter pumps the handle when the going gets tough.

The governor on my gas engine doesn't always pick-up the speed when the going gets tough, so I give it more gas using the throttle (before it stalls). Still playing around with the governor, to get it working properly. Only a couple of seconds of it running faster, solves the problem, with the throttle spring returning to the engine speed to the normal set speed.

It doesn't make sense to me. Ours doesn't do that.

I don;t "pump" the handle. The governor should kick in when the motor starts to bog down.
