Log Splitter Pressure

Please don't get me wrong JJ. I REALLY appreciate all of the help on here. I have not had a splitter before and I was hoping to get out cheap on this one. After looking at a lot of commercial built and home made versions I do not like the way this one is put together, componets or design. But it was free.

I have already had the cylinder seals redone and put money in the engine to get it working. So, I was hoping to not have to replace the engine, if possible. I realize something has to change to get it working correctly though so that is the next step. I think I will get a two stage pump and have to wait till later to get the valve. I do want to replace the valve though.

Wild.. all you require is a 2 stage pump.. the engine, cylinder and valve ok for this unit, it seems that you got the PR inside the valve working to a point where you can adjust it some what, with a new pump installed you should be able to fine tune it. If the PR still gives you trouble you can plumb a stand alone PR unit before the control valve. Jim

Sorry I haven't been up to speed on this thread (just now reading this) but I have a couple of questions and comments....

1800 rpm's..??..some pumps aren't very efficient at lower speeds....if it's stalling, likely not the pump...

Op'r says it has 9HP.....may need a flow meter/pressure test to calculate peak HP..... (HP=Pressure(PSIG)xFlow(GPM's)/1714)

Possibly engine not giving up 9 HP..??.....or maybe I didn't read this thread enough..:ashamed:

wdchyd,

That pump needs 14 HP at 2500 psi. His engine will stall about 3/4 speed

JJ, you're probably right as the OP'r says its a 4 gpm pump.....I just would trust the guages for realtime troubleshooting.....but then again I don't have to pay anybody to do the test......

One thing I've learned in hydraulics is "Only trust what you see and not what you don't"......

I've tested units before that the owner of the equipment would swear there was a problem with the "hydraulics" not the primemover (engine)...and low and behold the problem was the engine......I had a job 10+ yrs ago where a maintenance dept rebuilt all the hydraulics on an off-road drill rig....they spent weeks and thousands of dollars only to find out the hydraulics had the exact same problem as before the work was performed, it would bog down and stall the engine....after hooking up flow meter/test guages, it took moments to figure out it was not delivering the rated HP and stalled the engine dead.....problem found: cracked distributor cap......

It's tough to fix old log splitters when the price is right....we've all been there at least once......
