Figure your cost of operation vs purchase or free.

They were doing a retro here a couple of years ago the and the electrician just let each fixture crash to the floor...

I questioned why would they be so careless... he said there is no where he could install them due to the energy lighting standards on the jobs.

Does anyone have suggestions on florescent fixtures? how many? What size? How many bulbs per unit? T8, T5? They need to start in the cold, won't be heat in there for some time.

Well I spent three days this week working on the barn. I got the lower half of the second floor framed and put up OSB. Now there is no chance of accidentally stepping off the edge, or worse setting a leg of the step ladder out in nowhere land. We got the upper portion of the second floor walls framed. My wife learned how to use the coil nailer, she thought that was cool. Then we built a half wall along the opening for the stairwell.

I spent the next day building out the railing system for the stairs, installing the required diagonal bracing in the corners. Well in the corners that didn't have doors in the way, then cleaned up.

Lee, Are you putting any windows in the long walls on the second floor? All the light that you have now looks good. Nice stairway. Your barn is looking good. Rick

Rick,

Bear with me as I am half asleep as I type this. The short answer is yes the second floor will have windows. Longer answer, in addition to the two in the front wall already there will be eight additional windows. Four on each sidewall. There are 5 posts to each sidewall spaced 10'o.c. (0, 10, 20, 30, 40). This creates four "bays" between posts. Each bay will get one 4' wide, 2' high slider window, thus four windows per side for a total of 8 on the side walls. If you look at the picture above you will see two stacks of windows against the front wall on either side of the double window in the wall. Those are the sliders, they will be installed horizontally. Also if you look at the sidewall you can see what I mean about the "bays" between posts. The top nail flange of the windows will be secured to the outside header in the middle opening of each "bay". I hope this helps, again I am half asleep so it may not sound the same as it does in my head! I will take some more pictures and post them up as the upper walls get their windows and skin. For now, I bid you a good night.:)

The barn is looking great, the loft will make a nice workshop. Will you be heating the barn, or loft?

Thanks Dave. The second floor's usable space is 19'x35'. The plan is to create a wood shop up there so I can make the cabinets for the new house. That will be awhile before we get to that point though. Next year I am hopeful we can run a 320amp service to the barn, listening to the gas compressor and generator is getting old. As far as heating, the wood shop will get heat at some point, maybe radiant.
