Bob, I've been looking at 30hp tractors to do some grading, driveway work, stump removal in the Indiana Dunes area: sand, sand hils and slopes. The mix: LK3054XS TLB, CK30, Kubota 3030 and Kubota B7800. The Kiotis are almost 2x the weight of the Kubotas. What do u think would work best in this environment?

Hmmm, I don't have a clue. I don't know what would work better on the sand . . . heavy or light? But I would probably choose AG tires (R1) for use on the sand over Industrial (R4) tires.

My tractoring experiences include clay, loam and mud. No sand. My sales manager at my office used to own a company that custom built dune buggies. He said he made them light weight. He is also a tractor guy, lives in Michigan City but his lake house (where he keeps his tractors) is built on a few acres of silty clay. He told me he thinks light might be better, but that is based on dune buggy design experience not on tractor experience in the sand!!! He said a successful travers of sand is based on floatation, and pounds per square in of surface area are the battle he faced with buggy design. The fewer pounds per square inch, but better off the buggy was. If the buggy stopped floating, it simply dug itself into the sand ang got stuck.

Just thinking out loud here, I agree with Bob that lighter is better for sand, and on that same note I'd have to suggest R4's or even turf tires (if you won't be using it in snow) over the ag tires because they will give you a wider footprint, reducing your psi on the ground. I worked a consulting project in the Dunes 11 years ago and wider tires were a big plus.

Bowhunter . . . Well after listening more to my sales manager, I would also back off of the R1 tires. They are narrow. The R4 would likely be better. And the Turfs might be the best of all.

So I'll agree with you on the turf tires!

EDIT: OK I now know more about dune buggy tires than I have need to know, but a 3rd more detailed conversation with my sales manager confimed in his mind, and therefore in mine, that the widest available TURF tires on a LIGHT tractor would likely be best for sand dune work.

Galaxy tire has a wide turf tire. You'll see them in use on sod farms.

However, the JDeere site recommends NOT usng them in conjunction with a front end loader:

Don, excellent point!

The 2 problems I hear about turf tires are:

1) Front tires too wide leaving little clearance between the loader and the tires when the sidewall compresses under load and in some cases rubbing of the tires by the FEL.

2) Tire sidewalls are too soft for FEL work and compress under weight giving a bouncy feeling.

I suspect that proper selection of the front tires so that they are NOT too wide and do not contact the FEL when NOT under load, combined with FOAM FILLING the front tires to prevent compression, would effectively resolve both of the above issues. Even foam filling all 4 tires of a light tractor would not bring its weight up to the weight of a heavy tractor, especially given that any tractor would need ballast to properly balance it for FEL work. Now if a backhoe would be used, then I would NOT foam or fluid fill the REAR tires at all since the back hoe would provide more than enough counter weight for FEL use. IF the tractor is used for FEL use with a BH on some occasions and without a BH on other occasions, I would simply hang a weight box or Box Blade on the 3pt for proper balance and leave the rear tires UN-loaded. But using the FEL without any rear ballast is not a good practice, so the operator must be instructed and get in the habit of having some ballast on the rear for balance if the FEL is being used.

I believe HENRO foam filled the front tires of one, or perhaps both, of his tractors.

The 2 problems I hear about turf tires are...
I would like to make a clarification. There are "turf tires" that all the major tractor manufacturers offer. Then there are "Galaxy turf" tires which is a whole different type of tire. In pictures with the galaxy turf tires mounted on a tractor the difference is obvious, they look like standard turf tires on steriods. (still looking for a picture).

My personal experience is with the standard type turf tires. From demo-ing tractors with industrial tires I found a firmer, bumpier ride on the tractors (I attributed this to stiffer sidewalls). So if the operators lower back comfort is an important issue I would certainly consider turfs.

As far as turfs hitting the front tires. I would imagine that may be isolated to a particular model?

Sidewalls are to soft for FEL work....

For the smaller acreage, more grass than woods user, IMO I think turfs are OK. (Your mileage may vary.) They come standard 4 ply, however I have seen 6 ply turfs, in some sizes, on one tire website.

I believe Hazmat started out with industrials and has now added the standard turfs, maybe he will check in.

Found a picture......

These aren't galaxy brand turfs, the tires are quite similar though.

The rears are a Firestone 6-ply,"Turf & Field" 21.5 x 16.1
the fronts tires are a Goodyear 29 x 12.50-NHS.
