Losing Pins

Linch pins are fine for attaching the mower etc but the 3PT linkage itself really needs more reliable connectors as you rarely take them off and the consequences of having a 3PT come apart while under strain can be disastrous. I use some clevis pins with steel rings but I still think that an appropriately sized bolt and nylon lock nut is the safest way to go.

I had to replace the threaded adjusters twice after bushhogging. Zip ties is a good added protection and keeps these pieces attached to the tractor if they work loose. I also went as far to paint the adjusters florescent orange to possibly help me find them if they come off. Now I pay close attention to the implement for excessive swaying (a sign something has worked loose).

I solved the problem when bushogging. A roll of electrical tape was in the truck. Wrapped the tape around the loop and stretched it alittle. Worked great and no more dragging the bushog when the pins are not there.

I added galvanized flat washers to everything on the (3016) tractor that is retained by a "quick-release" type pin.

The spreader-bar I have took three flat washers; one on the inside of the arms and two on the outside. I put two washers on both sides of the rear pins which form the hinge on the FEL. So-far, so-good; the insulating-effect the washers have is protecting the pins and everything appears to have less "slop".

I use safety chain on my pins. My 4' florescent garage lights came with lightweight chain used to hang the fixtures. I didn't use all the chain so I used it to retain the pins should they come loose. I haven't lost one since.

The parts guy at the Mahindra dealer said he makes tethers out of clamps and light cable so that when the clip comes out it stays with the tractor. Seems to me the cable might catch on brush so I am going to try the zip tie idea.

This thread has made me think of the pins I've lost on my previous tractor and that I must be a tad lucky for not sustaining any damage. I think I'll go out this morning and use the zip tie solution as pictured by Mad Mac. There is no sense in pushing my luck.

Amazing - just went out and checked the lynch pins. Those that are most susceptible to loss - 3-point arms attached to tractor body - have already been dealt with by Kubota. The lynch pins have a small hole drilled at the end of the pin with a cotter pin installed and bent over. I guess its NOT my luck that prevented loss on my new tractor.

I lost quite a few lynch pins until I started buying the heavy duty black ones at Tractor Supply for 99 cents. So far I have not lost one. I like the zip tie idea but cutting them off will require a sharp knife. Zip ties and Velcro are two of the greatest inventions in modern time.
