Lost little dog to coyotes

That's the way I feel. Around here, the coyotes normally stay far enough away that you would need a rifle with a scope to get one. I keep marking my territory so maybe that's why they don't come around my place much!

At least as far as you know. :D

Yeah point taken.
You keep livestock to protect, ie. your livelihood is one thing.
However when you want to change the very nature of where you live or have moved to, why move or live there? Go someplace where you're more comfortable.
The people that let loose pets could really care less about those said pets. If they did they wouldn't be just opening the door and letting them go out to roam free.
But after all it is rural so it's okay it's not like in the city, 'oh **** it's a dog eat dog world out here'. 'Oh dear let's shoot 'it' so a fufu or purr kitten can live'.
It's sickening.
Well in our case we lived here before the coyotes moved in. I will shoot, trap or bludgeon them if given the opportunity. They have showed up in these counties over the last 10 years basically, I've lived here for 40. I'll also shoot copperheads if they come near my house, we have a few cougars as well, I'd shoot one in a minute if he's near my charges. Having said that, I'm glad that black bears and cougars are returning to their native lands, if threatened I'd shoot either without a blink. Coyotes however were not native here in at least 300 years, coy wolves, which the eastern coyotes mostly are, a 62 lb white male was killed near Showell a year or so back, five others were taken in the same approximate spot, averaged 48 lbs. When I lived in CA in the early 70's they were around 25lbs give or take. So we're talking about a bastard species not native to here, I'll kill 'em all given the chance and not lose a second of sleep. They were a nuisance, now they've become a danger.

And, Larry, hang their carcass on a fence post if you can.
My brother near Elizabeth City, NC does that a couple of times a year, backs them off for a long time. That's the area I grew up in, we had bears, cougars, bobcats, foxes, 4 kinds of poisonous snakes but zero coyotes, now the area is overrun. They came after the people, they're fair game.

Every animal has it's place in the ecosystem but it's not an unlimited right. Coyotes don't care for the ground squirrels, gophers, rabbits, cats, dogs, et.al. they eat nor would they hesitate, if the circumstances were right, to attack humans. So popping them off if you feel it's necessary shouldn't be a concern. Everything, except man has something higher in the food chain keeping it's population in check.

Now, that's an odd thought. :) I wonder how that will work out?

I think it's pretty obvious how it's working out.:2cents:

In areas where livestock are a substantial part of the local economy, coyote are generally classed as vermin. Truth is of course that most folk have not had a connection to where their food comes from for decades now. So they just love the fact that they can get cheap shrimp in the supermarket and have no idea that the shrimp are probably raised on raw sewage in some 3rd world country. Given that level of intellect, why should we be surprised that people would like to oppose our efforts to keep an out of control predator population in check ? So long as there is saline plumped and dyed beef in the supermarket from Argentina or Peru, it can't be a problem, right ? Soon it will be from China, laced with toxins and antibiotics... If it is not already. Then the same people wonder why we hunt deer/elk etc ?

Sorry to hear of your loss, pets are just like family members to most people. I have been hearing allot recently about all types of wild animals coming into neighborhoods, destroying property, domestic animals, and even attacks on children. The report spoke of Bears, Deere, Cougars (mountain lions) Wolves and of course Coyotes. Allot of "nature lovers" love the idea of these species making a comeback, yet do not wish to allow management of the excessive population explosion... Heck, some of these nuts would rather a human being suffer, than man controlling the resources, and problem by using hunters. Again, you have my sympathy for your loss.

I'm a nature lover, I'm not a nut. The issue is "the management of excessive population explosion" and how that is defined.

For more than a few folks, any animal they encounter is in need of population management. As humans expand their range, use more and more resources, and that management mindset is applied; the predictable result is there won't be sustaining populations of anything humans consider a threat outside of a zoo. That will lead to declines or explosions in non-threatening species too.

What sort of world do you want to pass on? How will that be achieved? I don't think it's nuts to work toward adapting to nature rather than always attempting to conquer or control nature. Adaptation isn't easy, it adds costs, and it's bound to raise disagreements. But what alternative are you offering?
