Sorry to hear the news, but you know what? Things always get better. Important that you keep a positive attitude and keep yourself looking hard for work.

You did good work and have a work ethic. You'll find work. That company will be sorry they lost a quality mechanic as I'm sure they get plenty of combacks from the shoddy repairs the other did.

With your skills i'd look in the area of bigger construction outfits with multiple trucks and equipment that needs service. How many guys can fix an injector but not operate the machine (plenty) You've got solids skills, and traits any business owner would love to have.

I was never fired but changed job several times for various reasons. I went from good job with telecom (automatic switch technician) to instrumentation and process control field. I was immediately sent to large construction project and I was painting cable trays for about six month. It made me question my decision. Then by some luck I ended up connecting cables in the control room and never saw a paint brush ever. I was independent serviceman about a year or so later. If the company provided training I never missed the opportunity. The company also had pay rise system which rewarded smart people. When you wanted a pay rise you had to increase your "qualification". To do so you had to apply for test, be recommended by your boss and compete with other applicants. In example there were 50 applicants and only 20 pay rises available. Top 20 got it and the rest had to wait (and be better prepared) for next round. The test took all day, no multiple answers. You either knew the answer or not. Then after the written test was finished (we got about 5 hours to do so) then we had to defend our written answers and answer additional questions verbally before a test commission. Seniority had very little to do with our pay. The difficulty of the test increased with the level of qualification. It was great system. It separated grain from chaff. The less smart got pay rises less frequently based on years with the company (similar to cost of living adjustments).

What I am saying is that company is as important as the job. Some appreciate your skills (and pay you accordingly) and some will not. Some companies have jobs where you can excel and use your skills and some simply don't have them. Those would just dumb you down. Those are a dead end and should be avoided.

If I was in your situation ( single ) I would consider moving to north Dakota or Midland Texas and working in the oil fields. Lots of 6 figure jobs , trucking , rig hands etc .

My main bills are, pickup truck loan, rent payment, student loans, and electric. At 14$ per hour I can't afford those. He said it would take 2 years or more to increase in pay. He was very upfront about that.
Not trying to be a dick but you can't afford your bills on $14 but you can on unemployment ? Good luck finding a job bud

My unemployment was actually $12 MORE a week than my take home due to no taxes..

That must vary state to state; Florida Max unemployment is $250+$25 (Fed) per week.

Have you thought about going the self employed route?

Only asking because a small shop owner I know did just that... he had worked at a couple of shops and didn't like the way they billed... charging for things not done.

Anyway, he decided he would never work for anyone again and has not since.

Started in a one bay shop with an office and now has 6 bays for 4 good men and a helper.

Well he get the job?
All the sudden things picked up! There was a small trucking company I applied for and wanted to work for, a company that changes and makes hydraulic lines on equipment, a kenworth dealer, and a cleaning company that went to factory's and power washed them.

On Thursday morning I went to my interview at the small trucking company. This company hauls liquids and industrial items. They have a total of 60 trucks and 200 trailers. This is a big difference from the 4000 trucks at old dominion freight line that I used to work at. I have always enjoyed helping the little man and have never been fond of working for corporations. So I already felt comfortable at this company. All they own and work on are long hood kenworths and other long hood trucks with Detroit 60 series, cummins ISX, and older caterpillar engines. At my last job it was mostly new engines, and also single axle trucks as opposed to tandems.

I already Felt comfortable walking through the door. The shop manager started the interview with me by giving me a 10 question test. He said he had been giving this test for 20 years to mechanics and because they run older equipment it would still help to see where I stand if I took this test.

I had not worked on any "real" caterpillar engines at my last shop. Only c12 and c13 engines which are both completely different than the larger older cat engines.

1. Q A few examples of questions- What does it mean if the fuel inside the fuel tank has turned black?

2Q. A caterpillar engine is getting coolant mixed into the engine oil. Why is this occurring.

1. A I explained that the engine oil getting into the fuel tank would have to be from the fuel return.

2. A I explained that their may be an oil cooler that is cooled by coolant that failed.

The correct answers are: many caterpillar engines are HEUI fuel systems Hydraulic electronic unit injectors. The fuel system is pressurized by oil pressure. Their is an O ring seal that likes to fail on the engine oil side of the fuel injection system. This will pump engine oil through the return line of the fuel system.

2. Explained: the water pump is driven by a gear directly off the engine. There is a gasket that can fail on or near the water pump and cause coolant to be pumped into the engine oil.

The shop supervisor liked how I answered the questions and liked to talk to me so he hired me 10 minutes into the interview. He said the job was mine if I wanted it. I told him I would call him within two days with a start date that would work for me.

Later that day I had an interview with kenworth. They were not willing to even pay me 15$ an hour after going to two different diesel technology schools and working 2 years at a truck shop. So I would be starting out at 10$ per hour there. Kinda tough in my position with having college debt, in debt for thousands of dollars with tools and a tool box required to keep my job as they threatened to fire me if I did not immediately increase what I had.

I accepted the job at the smaller truck company ASAP. I called him 7 am the next day. I start my job there today with good pay, respect, doing exactly what I want and not to mention the shop manager himself has had his CDL for 25 years so he will be taking me out on the road and supplying me a truck and trailer to take the test in!!! That's a huge deal to me!

My lease at my apartment ends may 18th. In order to get approved again I would have to wait 30 days then I could get approved for a house again. That is too rushed to buy a house. I have been renting for 3.5 years and I just can't seem to get out of it at all now. I will still shop after the 30 days are up at my new job but for now I may be renting for another 6 months. Very tough to do. I need a garage to work on my own vehicles and it may just have to wait. I don't have the closing fees or anything really and don't want to rush my purchase of a house down to one month. It takes longer than that to close on a house.

I'm renting either a tilt deck trailer today or something similar to move my tool box. Wish me luck!!!

thanks!! It's 8:30 am eastern and I'm headed out to get another rental trailer to move my tool boxes again lol. 40$ per 24 hours is less than it cost for a wrecker. They want hundreds $$$ I know because I called around to get quotes to move my box one mile and most said 75$ and up umm wow. I'm renting a trailer to move it 18 miles. It's a tilt deck trailer so I can load it all on my own again

Congratulations, it sounds like you've found a good fit. I think you're correct about not rushing the house thing. 6-12 months will pass by very quickly with your new job, take your time to get back on good financial ground and take the proper time to research your new home.
