Many of these stores were built during the last few big housing boom periods when everyone was convinced that any money they spent on home improvements they would get back double when they sold their house, it worked out pretty good for most of these stores during that time but them days are over now and I don't think they'll be coming back any time soon if ever.

I feel sorry foro Lowes as the employees bend over backwards to help you whereas the Home depot people ignore you and are cluless no matter what question you ask them. I sked for a particular item and the clerk took me to an aisle quickly looked and said "nope we're out" then a custome that overheard what I was looking for reached over and said here they are, as the clerk wasn't even phased looking stupid.

The city block ACE I patronized had someone in each department... if I couldn't find what I needed the manager could tell exactly how many were on the next truck and the hour it would be delivered...

The managers were all well experienced... plumbing, electrical, garden, the owner's wife did housewares, etc...

The store did not last two years after the founders death... opened in 1946...

Did they drop the Live Chat? I've used it a few times before, but can't find any mention of it now.

Well, it just popped up on my screen to use and an agent came on in a few seconds. Seems to be somewhat random I guess.

It amazes me that large operations will build a mega store ( Walmart, Costco, Sams Club, Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) within a mile of their competition Locally a Costco opened up for a year or two and was booming always crowded and never able to find a parking spot. So Sams club opened across the street, for five years Sams club was empty with few customers and only one register open as that is all that was needed. The Costco never lost a customer and is as busy as ever. Sams club did the same thing across town. Costco opened up across town for a year or two and was booming always crowded and never able to find a parking spot, and Sams club opened a block away. Three year later Sams club closed. Lowes opened a block from Home depot same thing the place is empty when Home depot has crowds. I've seen the same thing with these quick oil change companies. The copy cat store always seems to lose.

They do it for the same reason car dealerships, fast-food chains and supermarkets open new stores just down the street from the competition. They figure potential customers are already in the neighborhood, and they can benefit from those who couldn't find what they were looking for at the established store. If your store is on the other side of town maybe they'll make the trip, maybe not. Yeah, it takes time to become established, and if customers don't like what you have to offer the game is over. Costco doesn't have much of a presence in this part of the country so I don't know how they compare to Sam's. Lowes vs HD...5 of one, half dozen of the other in my experience.

I already didn’t like Lowe’s. Now that they closed Orchard Supply, they’re firmly on my blacklist.

I still miss Orchard... the store were clean and I could get in an out quick and 1.2 miles from work... the alternative left is Home Depot and I will not drive my service truck there to get something... been broken into... smash and grab at Home Depot at noon in plain sight.

In the Toronto area, HD bought Akinheads. A very good and unique hardware store with specialized small volume merchandise and expert sales help. That was a crime. Home Depot is garbage retailing at its finest. My lady friend was a manager there many years ago. She absolutely refuses to set foot in a HD ever again! If you ever Google HD employee complaints, it's quite the amazing and insightful read.

Home Depot bought the company I worked at, hoping to beef up sales to contractors. They took the fun right out of working there in no time flat. You only think you have an abundance of workplace rules until HD takes over. One example, right next to the big roll up door exiting to the yard, we were required to keep 30 5gallon empty pails, red, yellow, and black, inside a painted border. They were not to be touched or used. Nobody ever knew what their purpose was, they were still there when I retired.

Incidentally, the contractor luring scheme failed, and they eventually closed the business.
I didn稚 hate working for them though, as my workload got a lot lighter as time passed.
