Well, all I can say is apparently all Lowes stores are not the same. I have no complaints about our local Lowes stores.

My two local stores aren't the same. Different sizes and floor plans, different stocked items and pricing plans. What's on sale at one store may not be at the other. When I asked about it, they said they were in 'different markets' despite being about 10 miles apart in the same city.

I'm curious if they fall flat on their face? Like Target here.

The two Targets that opened here were a total joke. It was like they weren’t even trying to be successful.

I'd love to see Amazon get into the building supplies business. Their customer service and shipping are the best.

Would you order some drywall and lumber from Amazon? 20 sacks of concrete?

This thread reads like a mob scene. One complains about Lowes and everybody piles on. :confused3:

I agree and would add the smaller Best and Ace stores to my list that I frequent. Amazon has its place for sure but I am not going to hole up in my house and just order from them and other on line places.

If they could put it on my doorstep* within 48 hours with a click of a mouse, absolutely. I've been an Amazon customer for over 20 years, my experience is that they almost always get it right, and when they don't they make it right. That hasn't been my experience with Home Depot, Lowes, or the local lumberyard.

(*or where I need it on the property).

Both HD and Lowes have tons of stuff on their website that the local stores don't carry. Lowes -- or at least my Lowes -- won't let you do special orders, at least not online. You may be able to do it in the store, but it seems like a complete waste to drive to town so I can tell someone what I want so he can type it into a computer and have me come back a few weeks later -- assuming he typed it in correctly! HD does do special orders online, but they only do store pickup. And for some reason certain items can't be shipped to my local store, I have to pick them up at a different store that's twice as far away.

Both stores do delivery for items they have in stock. It seems like they are missing out on a tremendous opportunity. They have a website catalog of millions of specialty items. They have a way of getting them to the store. They have a way of getting items from the store to customers houses. If they could put it all together they could out-Amazon Amazon.

There is no way I would buy lumber sight unseen, too many blems. As far as sheetrock or concrete bags (and even lumber) goes, I would like to see Amazon deliver those to your doorstep undamaged.

When adding on or building new garages and such I would spend a lot of time culling through lumber and my builder friend said I needed to be smart about it.

He has his material delivered and buys framing lumber in bulk... as he draws from the load he tosses unacceptable material to the side for credit... sometimes the lumber is picked up and often the yard just credits him and gives it to him...

He is very successful and self made... said when you are a small operation you need to spend time wisely... which meant for him material delivered to job site...

Another husband/wife builders have the wife do a lot of the selecting and purchasing... which she has a real knack for and always driving for bargains...

Of course it is a little easier when you are building a custom home with two kitchens and shopping for all the doors, or all the appliances or cabinets, etc... also, she NEVER has to load anything... as the supply houses seem to be more helpful to women buyers that know what they want...

Right, when you are a builder that is the way to do it. I am usually only buying a small amount of lumber and check for blems closely so I have the quantity and quality that I need to finish when I start.
