Hello ladies and gents! First time poster, long time viewer.

Folks here are never short of an opinion on their FAVORITE subject so I'm soliciting yours to help me sort out my big purchase.

The dealer I'm talking to has me confused as all get out! Sometimes I wonder just how much they know about their own tractors!!??

Anyhow, I belive I have my search down to these two models. The base tractor price for these (as quoted) is as follows:

M5040 --> $21,500
L5040 --> $23,500

I also looked at the L5240 with cab for $28,500. The M5040 with cab was $31,00.

Why are the L series more expensive for what appears on the surface as less tractor, based on lift capacities, weight, etc. Now the cab models on the L series are less than the M's. Very confusing to me.

I will be using this in more of an Ag situation. I own 320 acres and plow & plant about 35 acres. Do a bunch of mowing, brush hogging, and spraying. Would like to start haying (about 20acres) on my own instead of giving it away! I have road maintenance and occassional log dragging as well.

I will add a FEL in the future but don't need it right away. I plan on having the hydraulic hook-ups ready to go when I order this. It get's pretty darn hot in KS during the summer so trying to determine whether or not my pocket book can handle the cab with air option.

Any thought you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Dave B.

Sounds like you should get the m5040. Much higher capacities, larger tires, smoother ride on large acreage. Better for baling, raking, all hay operations. L5040 will do them, no doubt but, but not as easily as M. That M cabbed price sounds like it should have a loader included. I 've seen on here M5040DT 4wd (clutched, dry shuttle) bare tractors for $19000. 5040 HD 4wd (clutchless wet shuttle) will probably add another $1000 or so. loader will add about $5000-$5500.

Also, you can build your own, with any options and add ons for the M or L, and get list pricing, on the Kubota website. Very helpful. Subtract 14%-20% and you've got an idea of what you should be paying.

Thank you for the input. I thought the quoted price was a bit high. I have not really push them to get a "final" price yet but will this week. I'm going to check with two others to see what they can do for me as well.

I have been leaning more towards the M series due to the increased specs on the units. I am just a bit curious why the cab for the M series is $3,500 more than the L series cab.

Thanx!

I won't say I know much about this, but from what I do know sounds like the M is the way to go for Ag work like you are talking.

a few decisions to make. to cab or not is big, as with the model. a while back there was a lengthy discussion of open deck vs cab that you might review. are your creature comforts more important than size or HP? (assuming you won't be depending on the cab for environmental hazards (dust, chemicals). I fall into the minority of open cab/ larger model. As far as L or M, I also have my prejudice: M all the way. Just do your homework and don't do like me and trade in my L w/50 hrs on a new M model. And go as big as your budget will allow just my narrow view. bb

I love my M5040! It's got 22 hours on it now. I've owned it for a couple of weeks and think I made an excellent choice. I farm about 250 acres, plow about 10 of it and we sell the grass off the rest. It's a bit light in the loafers pulling a heavy disc and 3 16" plows, but for 50 horsies, I'm impressed. The big massey fergueson will run off with the plows and hars, but it's 80+ HP IIRC.

I was in the same position, didn't NEED another big tractor, and had absolutely no use for anything under 45 horsepower. Don't do any "major" farming to speak of, jsut a little 'baccer. May eventually buy some cattle, which is why I went ahead and sprung for the 4wd in case I ever wanted a loader.

The price tag on mine was $19550.00 and I got it for $18953. 4wd, with fluid in the rear tires. :D

Conn:

DANG! That's a good price. I'll have some negotiating to do to get down to that level, but if they want to sell me a tractor, then so be it.

I appreciate the comments from Bubba as well. I've got myself convinced that the M series is the way to go. Creature comforts don't mean as much to me.....my 1953 Allis Chalmers WD45 is as rough as it gets from a comfort standpoint, so I guess I'll never miss what I never had! If I don't get a cab model then I will probably jump up to the M6040. Bigger is better right?? :)

The reason I wanted to look into the cab models was for my wife. She has a rough time sharing "her" tractor with anyone. (If she sits on it, then it's "hers") She developed Asthma two years ago and I think the dust from plowing and the pollen/dust from mowing get to her sometimes. Since I have a tough time getting her off MY TRACTOR, and she will mow, plow, or spray for HOURS, and I think the cab will help her. She says she doesn't want a cab but her health concerns me.

Guess I've got some more thinking to do!

Thank you folks!!

Conn, you stole that tractor. Now give law enforcement a break and turn yourself in. ;)

KSP: I'd go M5040 all the way if in your shoes. Wouldn't bother with the hydraulic clutch unless I anticipated lots of loader work. The quote on the open station sounds reasonable for tractor without FEL, but the cab price doesn't add up. Like was said earlier, it sounds like there's FEL in there...and maybe a hydraulic clutch as well.

The older you get the more you'll appreciate the cab...and the more productive you'll stay. It's not just for the Missus.

ksp - if you can swing it, I'd say the cab is a no brainer for the asthma alone. doctors fees can add up to that cab quick, and aren't nearly as pleasant.

Bob & Charles....

Thank you for the advise. I think I will beat on a dealer long enough to be able to afford a cab model. M5040.....here I come!

Thanx!
